Presidents Day

Hi,

Have just booked our 4th trip to NYC - 16th - 22nd Feb 08. Half term school holidays are a week later next year and I have a feeling that this will coincide with the Presidents Day Holiday? Could anyone advise me if this is correct?

Many thanks

p.s my reason for asking is that I believe that %26#39;Sales%26#39; will be on that week! :)

Presidents Day

Yup, President%26#39;s Day is 18 February 2008.

And double yup, sales are usually still going on at that time although they gear up mostly in January. Besides, coming from the UK with sterling pound, every trip to NY is a sale day for you :)

Presidents Day

Thanks. I wonder if the rate will be as good next year though??! Either way, cant wait to be back in NYC. Friends have said we are a bit mad booking a return again soo soon, but then again, they%26#39;ve never been, so cant understand the attraction. We gave our kids a choice.... New York or Florida..... they chose NYC! am well pleased, as NY beats Mickey any day ( no offence!)

Thanks

Shell :-)

You should also be aware that the correct name for both the federal and the New York State holiday is not ';Presidents Day'; but ';Washington%26#39;s Birthday.'; This might be useful information if doing Google searches.

Well, actually, the OP was correct in calling the holiday President%26#39;s Day. Originally, we celebrated two separate holidays in honor of American Presidents in February, Lincoln%26#39;s Birthday and Washington%26#39;s Birthday. When the federal government decided to make the observance a legal Monday holiday, they decided to call it President%26#39;s Day, intending to honor both Lincoln and Washington with one combined holiday. The Monday selected falls between the two original birhdays. Lincoln was Feb 12, and I think Washington was Feb 21.

Shell x, one thing you should know, the President%26#39;s Day holiday is the start of the a winter week long school vacation for much of the Northeast US. While sales are still going on, many attractions will be crowded with families.

No, in fact the OP was NOT correct. The Federal holiday is legally known as Washington%26#39;s Birthday. This may be confirmed by looking at the applicable law, which is 5 USC 6103 (a), which was the codification of the ';Uniform Monday Holiday Act'; of 1968. There is no federal holiday called President%26#39;s Day.

The State of New York has TWO holidays, with one called Lincoln%26#39;s Birthday, and one called Washington%26#39;s Birthday. This may be confirmed by looking at the applicable law, which is the General Construction Law, sectin 24.

It is rarely a good idea to offer corrections when one does not know what one is talking about.

Thanks for all responses. I only called it %26#39;Presidents Day%26#39; as that%26#39;s what I%26#39;d seen advertised on the tv on previous visits. I assumed (rightly or wrongly) that it was what we call %26#39;Bank Holidays%26#39; in the UK. When I was younger it meant that nearly everything including the banks were closed. Nowadays its normally just the banks and public service sector workers, schools etc.... the shops are all open. There are only usually two days over here when %26#39;most%26#39; things are closed ( shops).... Christmas Day and today, Easter Sunday.. but then again restaurants etc are open, making a complete anomaly of the whole thing.
