subway to brooklyn bridge walk / grimaldis

one of our days i want to take the subway to brooklyn ( i have the idiots guide to walking back over the bridge to manhattan written by Queensblvd ? ) and was wondering if Grimaldis Pizza is right in that area or within easy walking distance. After all the glowing recommendations, i just have to experience it myself.

TIA for your help

subway to brooklyn bridge walk / grimaldis

I think that%26#39;s probably GWB%26#39;s guide you%26#39;re thinking of (not to steal your thunder, QB!); he also put together a great guide to some common Brooklyn destinations, which will tell you how to get to Grimaldi%26#39;s. It%26#39;s here (just scroll down until you see the stuff about Grimaldi%26#39;s):

my apologies GWB...and thanks crans for pulling up that thread. i had only the subway / bridge locator section of that one printed out for the last trip. now i can enjoy both things at one time

buca, we used GWB%26#39;s guide last April and it was perfect. You cannot go wrong, so just go with that.

Spiderman Week, Five Boro Bike Tour, and Upper West Fest

I notice that during the time I’ll be in New York City the city will be celebrating Spiderman Week. Hmmm. I can’t quite decide if this is serendipitous or not! With New Yorkers and tourists alike scurrying off to the various and sundry Spiderman events, does this mean that the museums and art galleries will be less crowded?! [Yeah, right.] And can I assume that if I find myself lost in Soho or the East Village, I can count on Tobey Maguire coming to my rescue!?

What is definitely serendipitous, however, and which I just found out about this past weekend, is the fact that I’ll be in town for the “Five Boro Bike Tour” on May 6th. It will be exciting to watch all the bikes come up 6th Avenue on Sunday morning. It may not be the Tour de France but it should still be an impressive sight.

What I’m wondering is: how long will streets like 6th Avenue be closed to traffic? I gather the tour starts at 8:00 a.m. in Battery Park and I would expect that most bicyclists will have finished the Manhattan portion of the tour within an hour or so. In other words, I’m working on the assumption that street closures aren’t likely to affect whatever plans I might have for Sunday since the streets that are affected will probably all have re-opened to traffic by 10:00 a.m. at the latest. Moreover, since I’ll be getting around New York by subway and by foot, street closures probably aren’t even an issue at all.

I have also just noticed that the Upper West Fest will be going on while I’m in town [www.upperwestfest.com]. Just when I thought there couldn’t possibly be anything else going on in New York that I could fit into my itinerary, along comes something else to pique my curiosity. I haven’t had a chance yet to peruse the Upper West Fest schedule to determine if there is anything of particular interest to me, but I do know that I’m not going to let myself get distracted from what I already plan on doing. If time permits, and if there is something in the Upper West Fest schedule that appeals to me ......

Anyway, there is definitely no shortage of things to see and do in New York, that’s for sure! No wonder it’s the city that never sleeps; no one could possibly do everything that they might want to do in the space of a mere 12 hours! [Unless the person in question is Spiderman, of course.]

Spiderman Week, Five Boro Bike Tour, and Upper West Fest

And there will probably be lots of other events as well.

So much to see %26amp; do, indeed. I have lived here most of my life and still haven%26#39;t covered it all.

Spiderman Week, Five Boro Bike Tour, and Upper West Fest

I have now had a chance to go over the Upper West Fest schedule and there%26#39;s nothing that leaps out at me as something that I definitely want to see or have to do. If I do get involved in any of the Upper West Fest events it will be more by accident than by design.

Right now my big concern is: what to wear for Spiderman Week!? :-)

I wonder: will my usual threads (so to speak) be O.K.?

LOL. funny!

Seriously, the 5 Boro Bike Tour might affect some street traffic up until noon or so, but then business as usual.

(Hmmm...my Spidey Senses are tingling....I suspect that Spiderman Week could be a trap to lure us into a giant Hollywood marketing ploy!!)

  • How do I spot clean a quilt
  • NYC here we come......again!!!!!!!!!!!

yeehaw...........just booked a last minute flight and hotel for next weekend!!!

10 year anniversary trip. here i was thinking id have to wait until MY bday trip in july, but seems thats not so.

ok dont bother me now, im researching new places to go...ok first stop.......then............take #1 subway to...........LOL cant wait!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

    NYC here we come......again!!!!!!!!!!!

oh yeah, forgot to ask, how much should i tip servers? this always confuses me.........................LOL

    NYC here we come......again!!!!!!!!!!!

    Where you gonna stay, buca?

Do you need the weather forecast?

ny whiz......clarion la guardia of course!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

J/K.....this trip we%26#39;re at courtyard marriott new york / fifth avenue. we have some points to use so got a great deal. looks like an idea location and partner has stayed there on business before.

arent you proud of me......now i can non stop refer people here instead of the clarion....LOL

I am SOOO proud of you. That location is absolutely ideal. Hope you get a high floor room with a great view. Make sure you tell them it%26#39;s your anniversary.

Have a great time buca45, and you better not stiff the servers and taxi drivers !Are you going to carry your own luggage so you do not have to tip?( LoL) Enjoy and we are sure to hear all about your next trip ! Take care Tammy

Here are some guidelines you might find helpful:

Restaurants - self-serve or fast food - no tip required. Sit down restaurant with menu service and waitstaff - 15% tip is the norm. Some restaurants will automatically add the tip to your bill (particularly for large groups) so check the bill before you add a tip

Bellmen, etc. - if you use their services you should pay. In a moderately priced hotel $1/bag. If you don%26#39;t want to pay - carry your bags yourself.

Taxis - depnds upon the service and how far the ride was - any where from a couple of dollars to 10%.

    hehehehehehehehehe

thanks tammy, yes you will get a blow by blow account!!

Hooray!! This time don%26#39;t drink so much you black out and forget the names of all the clubs you%26#39;ll go to! We need more updated recos and reviews of both gay and straight clubs.

Hope you have another ';brush with fame!'; (I just saw Alec Baldwin on 9th Ave around 50th Street last night.)

    Macsurfer's ';live '; Trip Report Part 5

    Monday 9th:

Today we thought we%26#39;d head down to the Staten Island Ferry. Luckily like the last few days its mostly been sunny, so we got good views of Manhattan and the SOL.

Rather than just head back we were in an exploratrory mood so we got an S74 bus (when you exit the ferry you are in the bus station) to Richmond historic township.

Now, in my head I thought there%26#39;d be some nice old houses (yes) a coffee shop or two (er no) some stores (no) some loos (no again)some people (err thats a no again).

You%26#39;ve seen the films where somebody is dropped off a Greyhound in the middle of nowhere, with a suitcase under their arm. That%26#39;s Richmond!! so we wandered around the (quaint) little township, nothing was open, we asked a guy when it was open, and its a ';I don%26#39;t work here bud'; kind of answer...

So we wait for a bus and eventually get back to the ferry and grab a sandwich and jump on.

Then its time for coffee and cake in Starbucks before another marathon walk. Starting in Wall Street we head up for a look at the lobby of City Hall (dang that guide book, now not open to Joe public anymore!) we then queue up for the Municipal building with people recording births, marriages etc for another lobby. I think to check my guidebook again and realise I%26#39;ve got the wrong building!!

After confessing my planning has gone a bit pear shaped we walk up through Chinatown (Mott Street) across through Little Italy (Mulberry Street) andhave a look at the Cast-iron district in Soho (and the obligatory visit to another AppleStore!) Dropped into Kath Kidston (British designer) to buy a present.

Next to the ESB but yes regular readers just for the lobby!

Then on for dinner at the Carnegie Deli, yes I know I resist %26#39;toutristy%26#39;, but I%26#39;ll come out, I am one after all. Meal was fine, waiter was not at all rude, so was obviouly new and hadn%26#39;t read the employees manual. Portions were big but very good. not sure about the corned beef. That%26#39;s something we have in the cupboard at home in case we run out of real food!

Althea returned to our hotel and Joseph %26amp; I headed for the Javits centre for the Auto show. By co-incidence passed the Cheyenne Diner which is on the cover of my bedtime reading! (The Hard Way by Lee Child) Show was very good, but small compared to European shows.

What does tomorrow hold? Our penultimate full day, Part 6.....

    Macsurfer's ';live '; Trip Report Part 5

City Hall is a VERY handsome building, well worth seeing, and it does have free tours -- but you cannot just drop in. Since you are already in town, you can call 311 for information; those coming in from out of town may look here for more information:

    nyc.gov/html/鈥ity_hall.shtml

    Macsurfer's ';live '; Trip Report Part 5

Oh, and the lobby you wanted to see was probably in SURROGATE%26#39;S COURT across the street, which was built as the Hall of Records -- it looks like a smaller version of the Paris Opera. You can also see a grand frescoed lobby at Manhattan Supreme Court, at 60 Centre Street.

Thanks GWB we%26#39;ll check that out!

Our corned beef is NOT the same as yours. Our corned beef is what you call salt beef. What DID you eat at Carnegie if not corned beef? Pastrami?

Hi NYWhiz, no we didn%26#39;t have either corned beef or pastrami actually just an observation. interesting that%26#39;s its different though.

Will write Part 6, the final part in the morning!

Final 3 hotel choices - any comments welcome

I%26#39;ve booked my flights and started the hotel hunt and whilst I consider myself reasonably well travelled by the time I%26#39;d heard everyones advice on where they thought I should stay plus read so many reviews on here I felt overwhelmed by it all.

Anyway -I%26#39;ve narrowed my choice down to 3 hotels - not the fanciest I know but the ones which seem to have consistent reviews. They all average about the same price per night (around 拢200/拢220 GBP)

    1 - Vincci Avalon

2 - Hampton Inn Times Square - seems a little further out

3 - Hotel Metro - lots of people I know have stayed here - not sure whether it must be one used by the package companies

I just wanted any final opinions on these please - also should I try and book with a site where I can pay the balance up front (I%26#39;m not coming until November 1st) so I can take advantage of the current strong exchange rate?

Final 3 hotel choices - any comments welcome

I forgot to add - I was also considering the Michelangleo which is slightly more expensive (ny whizz recommended) however it does mention it was undergoing renovations. Although these are due to complete August - if they are anything like UK builders they may well over run

Final 3 hotel choices - any comments welcome

I dont have an answer for you, but I find it hard to believe you cant find a better rate. THe about in GBP is around 400 USD. That%26#39;s crazy.

If you pay ';upfront';, be sure you can get a refund if it becomes necessary.

I would do further searching for the hotel.

Sorry i couldnt be of more help.

I%26#39;ve been pricing them on expedia and rooms.com - if you can recommend any better search engines that would be great. Its marathon weekend that weekend so it seems to have bumped prices up.

I agree that those pirces are outrageous unless you mean they%26#39;re dollars rather than pounds or unless you%26#39;re coming in early December. Of your list, there%26#39;s no question that the Hampton Inn Times square is the best location. When you say ';...a little further out'; from WHERE? Certainly not from Times Square. There are better restaurants and better everything near it vs. the other 2.

You should be able to find these hotels for around $220-250 DOLLARS. Look on the Hampton Inn%26#39;s own website.

I%26#39;d also suggest you look on quikbook.com although I don%26#39;t think it generally has the Hampton Inn (it does have the other 2 regularly, but I don%26#39;t love their location).

On the Hamptons site for the dates I want its quoting $409 per night best available rate for 1st to 6th November which works out about 拢200GBP thats for a non smoking king standard room. Cheapest rate is $290 per night but that appears to be a contractor/gvt rate (I wasn%26#39;t sure what that was).

I%26#39;ll check out the other site you mentioned.

    What are your dates???

1st Nov for 5 nights departing on the 6th Nov.

Just to throw another one into the mix.

I stayed in the Wingate Inn which is on West 35th Street last December and have already booked for next November!! The dates you mention work out at $400 per night if you book online and pay now. The Wingate is a brand new hotel and is around the corner from Macys. We found it perfect for getting around and the area felt safe walking back after we all went our separate ways shopping.

If you go to their website the picture are exactly what you get. Breakfast is also included which is handy and saves money and time in the mornings. Have a look at the reviews and see what you think.

    Enjoy

I%26#39;m sorry I%26#39;m just seeing this for the first time, ruthiebabie. Unfortunately, your problem is the NYC Marathon is Nov. 4 and hotels are filled to overflowing at that time. I see a very good price for the lovely Affinia Gardens hotel on quikbook.com but it%26#39;s non cancelable and requires prepayment. Don%26#39;t know if that appeals to you and it%26#39;s not near Times Square but I think in a much nicer area than #1 %26amp; 3. I also think the Wingate Hotel mentioned above, which is in the same area as those 2 might be nicer and less expensive. Good luck!

I wouldnT stay in Times Square again. Too frenetic and tacky. We stay at the Salisbury which is in a nice part of midtown.

  • Metropolitan Museum

Would this take all day? Coming in from Jersey this weekend, should I drive in or take train and subway. How is parking? Can I park on the street?

    Metropolitan Museum

It certainly can take all day, but if you%26#39;re only mildly interested in art, you could spend half a day there without much problem.

Street parking is very difficult to come by; the Met has an underground garage and charges $35 for a five-hour or longer stay. Personally, I%26#39;d take the train and subway because I prefer it, but if you don%26#39;t mind the drive, you could use the garage.

    Metropolitan Museum

You won%26#39;t find street parking---well on Sundays you might, but it could forever to find it. But if you want to drive, you can reserve parking in advance on iconparking.com and know what you%26#39;ll be paying. If you do that, make sure to print out your receipt and show it when you arrive at the garage. I%26#39;ve had several friends who%26#39;ve started using this at my suggestion tell me they%26#39;ve arrived at appointed garage to ';full'; signs posted outside. Once they show their receipt, they%26#39;re waved in. If you wind up staying longer than expected, not a problem (but it may cost more).

If you decide to take the train, the subway is not that close to the museum. Depending on how many you are, you might want to take a taxi from the train station.

Here%26#39;s some lunch/brunch info from a former post.

    tripadvisor.com/ShowTopic-g60763-i5-k872249-鈥?/a>

I%26#39;ve driven in to the Met on a weekend. If you%26#39;re an early bird and can make it in by 10:00 you can get the ';early bird'; rates which most lots have. About 6 weeks ago my wife and I went to the Guggenheim and parked all day for only $15, having arrived at the lot at 9:50 am. Otherwise it would have been about double that.

Traffic is very easy at that hour, too (on a weekend, that is)

I usually don%26#39;t recommend driving to Manhattan but in this case I will because you are only driving to one place and the garage at the Met is ';park your own car'; and it has an entrance to the museum directly from the garage and a lower level admissions area that is usually less crowded than the ones on the main floor.

I can only take in about 4 hours at any museum without plummeting into ';visual overload; brain requests downtime';. That said, I love The Met and the area around it. If you have time take advantage of the proximity to Central Park and go for a stroll after lunch.

I never drive in Manhattan and enthusiastically recommend trains and subways. Driving always looks like mayhem to me and parking, yikes.

    Dining around Met. Museum

Thank you in advance. I will be in the city this Friday, Saturday or Sunday (hope not Sunday due to weather) with my 19 yr old daughter. She must go to the Museum for a project. Any suggestions for lunch and or dinner in the area. I am not familier with this section of the city other than Central Park and the Boathouse.

    Dining around Met. Museum

The cafes in the museum have been getting decent reviews here, so that%26#39;s one option.

Before I give you a litany of places, what sort of budget/places/food do you want and how far are you willing to walk?

    Dining around Met. Museum

My favorite for lunch is the Belgian chain, Le Pain Quotidien, on Madison Ave. between 84th-85th Sts. Unfortunately, they%26#39;re not open for dinner. Very popular for breakfast and lunch, though, so there%26#39;s usually a line on weekends.

price really is no problem. We will not be having coctails. Just looking for good food, nice place within a few blocks of the met museum. Something nice for mother and daughter. We rarely get to spend quality time together and am looking for a nice day with her.

Cafe Sabarsky is in the Neue museum just a few blocks north of the Met. It%26#39;s in an old mansion and it%26#39;s very atmospheric. It would be nice for lunch or dinner.

King%26#39;s Carriage House is a bit further from the museum but would be very nice for dinner. If you do that, maybe just grab a bite in the museum cafe for lunch and then do the nice dinner.

Sarabeth%26#39;s, in the Wales Hotel, at Madison and 92nd, might be a nice place for dinner, not as hectic as it is there for breakfast and lunch. Check their website for the dinner menu. There are at least two or three other places in the same stretch of Madison that look interesting, although I%26#39;ve not been to them -- small, bistro-type places frequented mostly by locals. There%26#39;s another place a bit further down, closer to 86th I think, called Centolire, that seems to get good reviews.

    Cafe Carlyle

Vivolo is a nice neighborhood place for good, reasonably priced food in the area. When I am in Manhattan I always stop in for dinner a couple of times. It%26#39;s on the Upper East Side, walking distance from the museum.

  • 42nd street safe

we are staying at the travel inn on west 42nd street is it going to be safe for my husband and i to walk back from times square after dark?

    42nd street safe

    Yes!

    42nd street safe

    Yes it certainly will be!!!

Where are people getting the idea that NYC is not safe?

    angelv88 - care to comment?

    Just had to ask.

    Poppa

Its been Disneyfied... It was always safe if gritty!

I feel more safe on 42nd street at night, then worrying about the dark country roads, where I live now.I have a better chance of hitting a deer with my car then for you not to be safe on 42nd street.Do not fear and enjoy new York!

We%26#39;ve stayed at the Travel Inn many times and have felt perfectly safe walking ';home'; from Times Square. You can also take the bus (it%26#39;s a few ';long'; blocks walking).

Note that you are also in walking distance of the Circle Line pier, and highly recommend the ';Harbor Lights'; cruise.

It is not safe because you%26#39;ll be tempted to blow all your money at the Hershey Store, the M%26amp;M Store, ESPN Zone, Madame Tussauds, Foot Locker, the MTV store, Toys R Us, and all the other chains and shops that now line ';The Deuce';.

You%26#39;ll only be safe if you are a recovering crack addict because you won%26#39;t find that on 42nd Street anymore and you%26#39;ll be able to stay safely on ';the program';.

Just so Angelv88 doesn%26#39;t feel mislead when she gets here, the Travel Inn on 42 is in a part of 42 that hasn%26#39;t been Disneyfied yet, but at the same time never was all that bad. The Disney stuff doesn%26#39;t hit until you cross 8th Ave. And I agree that it%26#39;s perfectly safe to walk back at night.

And, I might add, at 8th Ave between 40-42 streets is a HUGE bus terminal (the Port Authority Bus Terminal). Inside the south building is a wonderful bakery, Zaros. Though seating is very limited, if you want some great baked goods to go, this is a great place. They also have, what are IMO, the finest bagels in the world. I go through there on my commute every day.

I think you will be just fine. I%26#39;ve yet to have any safety issues in Manhattan. But if you have any concern after arriving don%26#39;t hesitate to flag a cab or arrange for a car in advance with your hotel.

    Hard Rock Cafe.

We are staying at the Doubletree Guest Suites Times Square %26amp; I read on here that the HRC was close by. Is this true %26amp; if so can anyone give me directions, Thanks.

    Hard Rock Cafe.

Your hotel is on the corner of 47th and Broadway and the Hard Rock is on the corner of 47th and Seventh. So you are right next door!

Head southwest on 7th Ave toward W 46th St and make a Slight right at 7th Ave onto Broadway. It%26#39;s all about 20 steps.

    Hard Rock Cafe.

We stayed at the Doubletree Times Square a couple of weeks ago and we ate at the Hard Rock Cafe a couple of times. When we left the lobby of the hotel we turned left and we walked to the end of the block and then we crossed the street in front of Toys R Us. HRC is about a block way.

Struggling to keep my mouth shut!

My husband and I come to NYC every Christmas (8 times and counting) but didn鈥檛 make it at the end of 2006. Back in Jan I booked a 2 night flying visit for the 4th of May as a surprise but I have found it so hard not being able to talk to him about it. Can鈥檛 wait till our anniversary on the 28th when I can finally tell him! It鈥檚 seems a long way to go for 2 nights but I couldn鈥檛 get child care for any longer. It will be worth it. Staying at the Sofitel. Have booked Jean Georges and have tickets for Wicked. Just hope I don鈥檛 slip up over the next 2 weeks. We both have an addiction to the place!

Struggling to keep my mouth shut!

What a great surprise - he%26#39;ll be delighted.

Struggling to keep my mouth shut!

It is worth it. I think that if this was something in your heart to do.I under stand coming a long way for 2 days, but we only live 1 time so if 2 days is all you have make it the best 2 days ever.If you tell him maybe he can come up with an idea to stay longer some how.Best wishes!

good for you! I would rather come for 2 days than not at all! Have fun and good luck keeping it quiet!

Good luck keeping the surprise a secret!

I%26#39;m originally from New York but I live further South now (cost of living) but NY is still my city. When I want a good meal or do some serious shopping I go home. I could undestand your addiction. Have a wonderful time and I hope you and your husband have a wonderful time.

Michelin-star-chick, have you been to NYC in the spring before, or always in December? If you haven%26#39;t, you are in for a treat -- May is one of the prettiest times of the year here!

You%26#39;re doing so well to keep it a secret all of this time! Don%26#39;t blow it with a couple of weeks to go!

You have a very lucky husband there (mine is an unfortunate husband since he%26#39;s letting me return without him later this year!)

I%26#39;m sure you%26#39;ll both make the most of the little time you have. You%26#39;re right that 2 nights is better than none.

PS. Enjoy Jean Georges! Post back and let us know how it went!

GREENWHITE BLUE - We have only ever been at Christmas - looking forward to seeing the place during May.

ANGE- Tried to book lunch at Jean Georges for the saturday but they aren%26#39;t open for lunch! Had same problem at Gordon Ramsay but eventually booked there for dinner on the night we arrive at 10.30pm!

Do try to go someplace where you can appreciate the green and flowery lusciousness of May. Good choices would be the Brooklyn Botanic Garden, the New York Botanical Garden in the Brons, the Conservatory Garden in Central Park at Fifth and 103rd, Rockefeller Park along the Hudson down in Battery Park City, and the Brooklyn Promenade.

... and I almost forgot to mention the Cloisters!!!

My Restaurant Pics for Great Eating in Manhattan

I%26#39;ve been living in Manhattan for six years and have never thought to post any of my personal opinions or experiences regarding GREAT, INEXPENSIVE restaurants to eat in when in Manhattan. So, I hope some of you can reap the benefits of my experience. Here are my favorites:

Indian Food: Raj Mahal (6th Street, bet 1st %26amp; 2nd Avenues) Dinner Specials are $9.95 and include soup, hot meat or vegetable samosa appetizer, choice of main course, a glass of soda, and pudding. The soup is delicious. As is the samosa. We have in the past asked them to give us the Chicken Tikka Masala as the main course (even though it isn%26#39;t on the specials menu) and pay an extra $1 or $2. It is the best we%26#39;ve ever had. Creamy with large pieces of chicken. We are not crazy about the pudding, but to each his own. This is in our opinion, the best Indian Restaurant in NYC. On the weekends they even have live music.

Mexican Food: Maryanne%26#39;s (corner of 5th Street and 2nd Avenue) Most entrees cost $8-$12 and include beans and rice. Lots of food for a small price. Like Sangria? a Half pitcher is only $9 and fills 4 cups. This is our favorite restaurant in all of NYC.

Thai: Sea (2nd Ave- near 5th Street) Most meals are between $8-$12. Try the Rama The King entree... delicious peanut sauce.

BBQ: Ok, while its not the best out there, you can%26#39;t beat the prices at the Dallas BBQ restaurants that are all over NYC. Most meals are $10-$12 and include cornbread and a baked potato. The ribs are outstanding. Get HUGE alcoholic Pina Colada or Strawberry Daquiri for only $8.

I%26#39;ll post more if I think of any more great restaurants!

  • Apartment Rental - Neighborhood OK?

My sister and I are coming to NYC for the first time in May for four days and I have looked at a ton of hotels and just recently started looking at apartment rentals. I have found one through apt168.com and it is at 38th and Park Ave. The pictures look nice but is this a decent neighborhood for two girls (late 20%26#39;s to be staying)?

    Apartment Rental - Neighborhood OK?

Great area, no need to worry.

    Apartment Rental - Neighborhood OK?

The location is good but I%26#39;ve never heard of this co. Pay attention to details like what floor it%26#39;s on and whether there%26#39;s an elevator. There are lots of apt. scams. Do not pay all upfront and do not wire funds. Wonder why you can%26#39;t find a hotel. Murray Hill East suites, Eastgate Tower and the Shelburne Murray Hill are in this general area. Check prices for these.

just wanna put in one more plug for my favorite hotel-the tirty thirty!

it is in this general area and it is great, with flexible rates, easy upgrades and just great all around!

I have found hotels in our budget but all the reviews I have found say that most are shoeboxes and if we can have a decent place that we can be more comfortable in - I%26#39;m all for it.

I found the listing on vrbo.com but I guess it is it%26#39;s own company that has a few places... thanks a lot for the tips though. I will definitely keep that in mind.

I have also looked at these properties on the web and would be interested to know what your final decision was. I am a bit reluctant to book in case it is a scam. Did you contact apt168.com and if so what was the outcome? Have you found somewhere else? I would appreciate your comments.

  • Reasonably priced restaurants in Greenwich Village?

For either lunch or dinner....we were there for an hour or so last trip and loved it....what are some great, and reasonable priced ($10-$20 a person) restaurants there?

Reasonably priced restaurants in Greenwich Village?

Any foods you love or hate?

Reasonably priced restaurants in Greenwich Village?

I love all foods...just looking for a good mom and pop place in the Village (I know they all are mom and pop!)

They are not all Mom and Pop and Greenwich Village is a relatively large area (east village, west village, central village). Are you talking about lunch or dinner?

I like La Lanterna for Italian with jazz. I also like %26#39;ino which is a wine bar.

Both....might go there one day for lunch and one day for an early dinner

Try %26#39;ino on Bedford Street in the Village - among the best panini sandwiches in the city and a great wine bar also.

    Staten Island

Hi, What is there to do at Staten Island, or do most people just reboard for the return trip after seeing SOL???

    thanks mrs dj

    Staten Island

Staten Island is one of the 5 boroughs (sections) of New York City (along with Manhattan, Queens, the Bronx, and Brooklyn).

The Statue of Liberty is on Liberty Island.

Visitors to the Statue of Liberty have the option (at additonal cost) of visiting nearby Ellis Island which has the American Family Immigration History Center.

    Go here for info: http://www.nps.gov/stli/

    Staten Island

I think the last post answered your question.I would suggest if you have time and want to see the boroughs of new york city, besides manhattan I would also check out the Bronx for the bronx zoo and the New york yankees.Queens has the home of the mets baseball team and the old worlds fair flushing meadow park.In Brookyln there is plenty to see like the the aquarium in brookyln there are many trendy places to eat and visit.Statan island there is blue heron park and historic Richmond Town museum.Have a great trip!

Thanks to both of you, for your quick reply and great info (as always)

    mrs dj

However, some visitors with short itineraries or other interests just take the Staten Island Ferry - the free commmuter ferry - to see the SOL from a reasonable distance. This ferry goes to Staten Island only.

Staten Island is mostly residential. It%26#39;s almost suburban, so if you want to see what%26#39;s there, you def need a map and a more specific plan. There are buses that will take you to the mall, the S.I. Historial Society and zoo.

Staten Island is twice the size of Manhattan, but has only one-third of its population. There are some things to see on Staten Island (the Jacques Marchais Museum of Tibetan Art is small but nice; the house where Garibaldi lived in exile is interesting if Garibaldi interests you; there are some houses dating back to the 17th C., etc.) but they tend to be scattered, at quite a distance from the ferry, and not easily accessible except by car. Thus, most people who are riding the ferry for fun do indeed just turn around and reboard for Manhattan.

thanks to both queensboulevard %26amp; greenwhiteblue...... what would i do without the ny experts......

    Please organize this for me....

    Ground zero 8:30 am

    Century 21

Subway Fulton st. to Canal st. Chinatown?

Or walk over Fulton st. to Pier 17 - TKTS 11:00 am?

Or will we have time to do Chinatown and then go to Pier 17? How do we get there from Chinatown?

Walk Pier 17 to Staten Island Ferry? Or is there a bus?

Sorry this is confusing, I just want to make sure I%26#39;m at Pier 17 by 11:00 and want to make sure all this other stuff gets done the same day. Getting nervous!! Only 3 weeks left to plan. Thanks again! :)

    Please organize this for me....

WHY Ground Zerio at 8:30 am??? If this is a M-Fri, I would go to Century 21 first. They open at something like 7:30. That%26#39;s when it%26#39;s least crowded. Then stop at WTC memorial and St. Paul%26#39;s. From there head to TKTs booth.

This downtown interactive map might help you

    http://www.downtownny.com/?sid=323

    Please organize this for me....

The other poster stated it rather well - go to Century 21 (C21 is what I like to call it) first thing, as there are less crowds and they open very EARLY.

Okay, C21 is right across the street from the former World Trade Center site, so that should be next on your agenda. Depending on what time you start in the morning, you could complete both by 9:00/30ish in the morning. You should know, however, that the South Street Seaport (pier 17) is very close to both of these locations (just walk east on Fulton Street and you%26#39;ll run into the seaport), so going to Chinatown is a little out of the way, but doable. If you get a late start on the beginning of the day, go to Chinatown AFTER you get the tickets at the TKTS booth at the seaport.

If you then want to visit Chinatown, take the R or W line (yellow it will be almost right in front of the WTC site on Church St.) north to Canal Street. You will exit at the intersection of Broadway and Canal, which is bustling with people. There are numerous shops and restaurants on and just off Canal Street. Try walking around Mott Street, as it has some interesting shops. You will probably spend more time here (it is so busy and difficult to navigate quickly through the crowds) than at C21 or even the World Trade Center.

If you then need to get to the TKTS booth from Canal Street, take the J, M or Z line (brown line) south to Fulton Street. When you come out of the station walk east.

You can walk to the Staten Island Ferry from the Seaport or take a bus. I used to work in this area, so it just depends on if your party enjoys walking or not. If you need a bus from the Seaport, walk back down Fulton to Water Street. Catch the 15 OR 9 bus route SOUTH for a few blocks. You can ask the driver to let you know when to get out, but he/she should announce the stop, which is directly to the east of Battery Park.

Be certain each person in your group buys a metrocard (1 or 7 day unlimited ride fun passes are available), as you will get free bus to subway transfers - don%26#39;t pay per ride as this will cost a fortune. Also, subway and bus maps are available at each station free of charge.

You can walk from the Seaport to Chinatown in about 15 minutes. (continue north on Water to wheer it meets Pearl, and continue north on Pearl under th Brooklyn Bridge. Past the phone company building bear left on St. James Place, -- Pearl makes an odd left turn there, so you leave it -- and continue on to Chatham Square.)

If you want to take the subway, do not walk all the way back to Cortlandt Street station of the R on Church Street. Instead, take the M, Z or J from Fulton Street station (corner of Nassau Street) and go two stops (towards ';Metropolitan Avenue';, not towards Broad Street) to Canal Street (you will come out at the corner of Centre Street.).

    Hey Becky,

One last note about your scheduling. If you really want to take your time and enjoy the experience of all things on your agenda, instead of running to and fro, perhaps consider this - do C21 and the World Trade Center in the morning. Then walk over to the seaport, which has a nice view of Brooklyn and the east river, and there is a food court if you need a snack. Get your tickets for the Broadway show/musical. Then walk (it%26#39;s only a few blocks) or take the bus to the SI ferry. Afterwards, go to Chinatown in the afternoon before heading to your show/musical.

Radisson Martinique on Broadway Friday Night

I%26#39;m staying at the Radisson on Broadway this Friday night with my daughter. The hotel doesn%26#39;t have very good reviews. Is there anything that I could do in advance to try and get the best possible room in this hotel? Any advice or suggestions would be appreciated. Thanks, Janie

Radisson Martinique on Broadway Friday Night

Hi I have booked to stay there in 2 weeks time for 5 nights. The reviews I have read on here and expedia are mixed. I guess you could always ask for another room if you dont like the one you%26#39;re allocated, its worked for me in the past.

Would be really interested to hear how you get on, please let me know.

    Have fun!

Radisson Martinique on Broadway Friday Night

We stayed here last year when it was the Holiday Inn Martinique. Overall the hotel was fine for what we needed it for - however our only problem was that we requested a non smoking room and when we went back to the hotel later in the day to check in our NS Room still wasn%26#39;t ready due to a large group having late check outs. We need to freshen up to meet somebody so we took a smoking room - they put some kind of machine in the room while we were out to get the smoke smell out. When we came back that night you could still smell the linger of smoke but for us we made it work - we only were in it to shower and sleep for one night. The hotel was in a good location - close to Penn Station and the Subway, Macys. The hotel staff were all very pleasant!

    Sofitel with young children

We will be staying in NYC for 4 nights the beginning of June. We%26#39;ve booked a suite at the Sofitel after seeing all the wonderful reviews here. I have noticed, however, that most people don%26#39;t recommend it for families with young children, any idea why? We will be traveling with my parents and our two children, 7 and 3. Should I be concerned? I also have rooms booked at the Doubletree. We stayed there last year and the kids loved it and it was good for families, I was just hoping to introduce the kids to something a bit more luxurious this year. What do you think?

    Thanks for your help :-)

    Sofitel with young children

This is not a typical family hotel. I don%26#39;t know if you mean people actually said DON%26#39;T stay here with kids or whether they just don%26#39;t think of it as a kids%26#39; place. I don%26#39;t know what the Sofitel suites are like (size, layout etc.) or whether you%26#39;re planning to all 6 of you stay together. The location of the Sofitel is a lot saner but the kids may not like it as much.

    Sofitel with young children

At the risk of being deleted or flamed - I vote that places I%26#39;ve stayed at are not good for families when I want to keep them adult! Especially the places I stay for business... I stay at the Sofitel in Chicago regularly and have never seen a kid there...

I was also interested in staying in a suite at the Sofitel but was told that our 10 yr old daughter would be sleeping on the couch. I originally thought the reservation person at the hotel meant a pull out, but no, I was told the suites do not have pull outs nor do they have cots available. I got the distinct impression they were not interested in catering to families so we are staying somewhere else...

I just stayed here about 2 weeks ago and in my review, I did not recommend it for kids. The main reason for that is b/c I didn%26#39;t know if they had bigger rooms that would accommodate families more easily than a typical hotel room. My husband and I have a one year old but he was not with us on this trip. Looking at the room as a mom of small child, it would have been difficult for all 3 of us in that room just b/c of all the things we would still need right now (a place for us while he napped, refrigerator, etc.). That certainly affected my viewing this hotel as place for or not for kids.

The hotel is so nice and luxurious and seemed to be full of couples and business travelers. However, I did see a huge extended family checking out one morning, with small children, so it%26#39;s not like no one ever takes kids there. If the suite set-up seems ok to you, then I%26#39;m sure your kids will be fine there. The location of the hotel is wonderful and makes it really easy to get to other places around town, which should be an advantage with little ones. Since your kids are older, you probably wouldn%26#39;t have some of the same concerns that I would. Have a great trip!

Thank you all for your replies, this is great information!

I had no idea they didn%26#39;t have cots available.... We have two suites booked, with one child staying with us and the other in my my parents room. We bring a little blow-up toddler bed for our 3 year old but had planned for our 7 year old to sleep on a cot. I can%26#39;t justify making my poor 7 year old sleep on a couch for 4 nights because mommy wants a marble bathroom :-) I%26#39;ll give them a call and find out where the ';1 child per room'; (which is what they allow) is supposed to sleep. Thanks again for the great information, I hope the Sofitel works out but if not the Doubletree will be fine too!!

Have you considered just buying your own rollaway cot/bed.? They don%26#39;t cost much and they are sold in New York. You could also buy one on the internet and have it shipped to the hotel for your arrival. If you%26#39;re driving ,and have the room, you could take it home with you.

We have three children and have gotten used to being very specific when making room reservations....Do they have ';connecting'; rooms, if not can they guarantee adjoining (now that the kids are a bit older), are cots or rollaways available? Are there kids gift packs or welcome games? We recently stayed at the Regency and felt it was great for our family!

Regarding the feeling that some guests may prefer not to have kids there, well there are more business travelers bringing their kids on combined business/pleasure, and more families who want the ';marble bath'; and luxury linens. I personally think it has do more with behavior expectations and educating children on appropriate behavior in public (semi public) areas. I personally have been kept up at night more often by ';ahem'; adult noises (of all types) than children who often conk out after a full day of touring.

    You%26#39;re a rare parent Yankeemom!

I think it would be so mean to be in the greatest bed in the world while the poor kid is in a cot! Was just at the Ritz Carlton Tysons Corner - and that bed could not compare to the one at the Sofitel

evening: that poor kid (or kids in my case) were actually two girls sharing a king size bed and my son on a roll away that was actually a twin size matress. They had their ';own'; marble bath! My heart bleeds for them! After the first night the girls wanted to know if they could take turns in the roll away ';so they could each have a turn in their own bed.'; (At least they%26#39;re learning how to take turns).

And I certainly hope I am not a rare parent!

Just returned from 5 night stay at Sofitel. My hubby and I did remark however that there were not many kids about. This was one reason why we picked this Hotel. We had left our kids at home and wanted a little luxury. Hotel excellent but don,t know if I wuold take my kids there if we ever return to New York. Would also work out expensive!!!!

  • places to eat near macys

any ideas of reasonable priced places to eat near to macys and surrounding area

    places to eat near macys

There are mostly fast-food outlets in that area. If you%26#39;re looking for a casual place for lunch, there are a few in Macy%26#39;s itself. I would suggest you avoid the McDonald%26#39;s in the store though. Recent reports haven%26#39;t been complimentary.

For other places in the area, go to menupages.com, where you can search by neighborhood, cuisine, etc. You can read reviews and see sample menus as well. (The menus have mostly outdated prices though.)

    places to eat near macys

Go to Macy%26#39;s Cellar, very good food %26amp; reasonably priced.

For decent burgers %26amp; salads, Heartland Brewery, 34th @5th Avenue. Nothing fancy.

    Jack Dempseys - W. 33rd Street between 6th Avenue %26amp; Broadway

    jackdemseys.com

Yes, do avoid the McDonalds in Macys! They had bugs in their drinks!!!

So disgusting, I want to report it.

I ate at the Grill, it was a very good. Huge portions.

If you walk over to Lexington Ave (about 10 min east) and turn South there will be plenty of good neighborhood restaurants. I work near there and when we go to lunch we often end up on Lexington between 24-33 streets. Examples of good places are Curry Leaf (Indian, at 27th street, Le Petit Auberge (French, 116 Lexington, between 27 %26amp; 28), Turkish Kitchen (386 3rd Ave | Btwn 27th %26amp; 28th St ), Jaiya (Thai, 396 3rd Ave | At 28th St) and much more

...as I think about it, walking form Macy%26#39;s to Lexington is LESS than 10 min, probably more like 5 minutes

And if you want a really nice place, try ';11 Madison'; at Madison %26amp; 23rd. And while you%26#39;re on 23rd, try Live Bait on 23rd between Broadway %26amp; Madison -- they have the best catfish sandwhich in the galaxy.

If you want to walk a few blocks.... Artisanal is on 32nd between Park and Madison Aves.

There%26#39;s always shopping. Or exploring central park. One of the things I really enjoyed on my last trip was wandering around the lower east side, followed by a tour at the Tenament Museum, followed by lunch at Katz%26#39;s deli. There%26#39;s lots of cool little shops and cafes in that area.

    Thanks Tripgirl,

She has just texted me to say that they are in Union Sq area.....any ideas?

    Bump

Fantastic shoe shopping at DSW in union sq, and Cafeteria is quite close to there also. Excellent macaroni and cheese and hot chocolate.

Sorry, not Cafeteria - City Bakery! its at 18th st between 5th and 6th

Thank you so much.......she is frantic trying to make the most of her last few hours there.

Its her first trip %26amp; loves it, but doesn%26#39;t want to waste a second before the flight home.

i suggested carrie bradshaws apt.....its close by union sq????

That%26#39;s on Perry st in Greenwich village, she would have to get a subway or cab. One of the locals will know more about this than me!

She%26#39;s not far from MoMA (Museum of Modern Art). On a miserable, rainy day like today that would be a good option.

new york logistics? to save money on a hotel

My second time to New York, but the first without an experienced person organizing things. I have two nights to stay in New York prior to taking a cruise out of New York. I need a hotel that isn%26#39;t going to break the bank. Is it a reasonable option to stay in New Jersey and visit new york sights? I have booked tickets to Spamalot for one of the nights, again where is this theatre? I%26#39;m lost, please help me.

    details: flying in to JFK

cruise - norwegian dawn, port? just said new york, i don%26#39;t have the details yet.

    show - Spamalot Venue:

    Shubert Theatre

225 West 44th Street (Between Broadway and 8th Avenue)

So where is the best place to stay? How should i get from airport to hotel? hotel to show? hotel to port?

any other suggestions would be great, I%26#39;m at a total loss.

    cheers,

    Googs

new york logistics? to save money on a hotel

The best place to stay to sightsee and go to theater is IN Manhattan. All the theaters and the Manhattan cruise terminal are near each other. But I can%26#39;t tell you which port your ship leaves from. There%26#39;s one in New Jersey and another in Brooklyn. If your port is not the Manhattan one, you either have the inconvenience of getting there from Manhattan (car service is probably best) but having an easy time while you%26#39;re here sightseeing and going to the theater. Otherwise, stay near the pier and be inconvenienced the rest of the time. Doesn%26#39;t make sense to me.

When is this happening and what%26#39;s your hotel budget? How many are you?

new york logistics? to save money on a hotel

The best place for you to stay sounds like in/near Times Square (and your theater). To get from the airport you can either use a taxi or car service (about $60 for up to 4 people) or a bus to Port Authority (~$15/person) and walk from there to hotel. The Westin is the nicest hotel close to Port Authority (it%26#39;s actually across the street) and would also be around the corner from the theater and not far from the Manhattan cruise terminal. It is pricey though. A budget option would be Radio City apartments but it%26#39;s so popular it%26#39;s hard to find a room there free.

    radiocityapartments.com

thanks for the quick reply. It must be the manhattan port since its not new jersey or brooklyn. i%26#39;ll try the radiocity site and see what i can find. don%26#39;t laugh but i was hoping to find something under 200 a night, for two of us that is clean (bug free)! May 17th arrival - check out May 19th. I also have a night on our return May 26th, so i%26#39;ll have to find a hotel for that night as well. i haven%26#39;t had any thoughts for that hotel stay. we%26#39;d be leaving at 5:30pm from JFK.

I%26#39;ve emailed Radiocity apartments, just waiting for a reply. Another question came up. While i was searching for hotels i was asked what area, i typed in Broadway but that wasn%26#39;t an option. Which area am i searching for?

    Manhattan east side

    Manhattan south

    Theatre district

    Midtown east side

    Upper west side

    Central Park

I can also search for a hotel near an attraction, is there an attraction in the area you have suggested?

googs, look at the topics under the green NEW YORK CITY portion on the upper left hand side of this page.

read NYC Overview to get basic information, check out hotels, attractions and maps as well. on each hotel is a %26#39;map this hotel%26#39; feature. once you get that info, use the map feature (or go to google maps) to see what section of town it is in. attractions are all there as well so once you settle in and have a bit of confidence about the cities%26#39; basic layout, you will get an idea of what you might want to see.

you sort of answered your own question about what area you want to be in.....the theatre district followed by the west side of the city.

as far as getting from point a to point b, under the overview section you will find the detailed directions you need to get where you need to go.

also, go to the NCL website and once you register/log in and give your cruise info, you should be told which port you will be sailing from.

i dont mean to sound harsh, but do a bit of homework yourself then ask specific questions on the forum.

i find when i was planning my trip (and the one im planning to nyc next weekend) that doing this searching was the most enjoyable way to spend a few hours and the information that i came across in searching was invaluable to me once i was in the city.

one more thing, there is a search bar on the upper left....you can type keywords in there and the forum will find threads that will answer your questions in detail.

To be near the theaters for the first stay you%26#39;d want theater district, midtown west or times square. But I did some searching for you and even the basic places seem to be pricey for 5/17-19 (the Travel Inn is $300/night!!) You might want to consider booking something cancelable (the cheapest ';ok'; things I see are around $269-280 plus tax) and try bidding on priceline for a 4* hotel in midtown west.

For your 1 night on the return before going to JFK, what do you plan to do on that day? You could theoretically stay anywhere. You might find better deals downtown in the financial district of near the South Street Seaport, which wouldn%26#39;t be a problem if you%26#39;re taking a cab or car service to the airport. They could go over the Brooklyn Bridge. Might even be nice to stay in a different area.

thank you very much for all your help, i was able to book at radio city and its within my budget.

    buca45,

    Yes you were too harsh!

I had spent hours on research and all i had was more questions, there is so much out there re: New York its overwhelming, well to me it is. Fortunately there are people like nywhiz who have a wealth of information and don%26#39;t have a problem sharing it.

i apologize googs.........didnt mean for it to come out that way!!

i agree, when you first start researching for things regarding NYC, it seems overwhelming. believe me, sitting in barnes and noble and then in front of this computer for hours going from google maps to guides to this forum and back and then to the mta site........yes frustrating doesnt even begin to tell how i was feeling.

but as i said before, once i finally got the basics down, i started to connect all that info together and then started to find out the %26#39;hidden secrets%26#39; of the city that this forum offers.

yes its hard work, but the more you read and the more time spent in front of a map all pays off in the end. other than a brief subway %26#39;seperation%26#39; from my friends, we didnt get lost or have any problems navigating this huge wonderful city.

again, my apologies for sounding mean, but to research on your own is, in the end, enjoyable. good luck!!!

    Googs,

We did a NCL cruise on the Dawn out of NYC last year. Don%26#39;t remember exactly which pier but it%26#39;s somewhere around 50th. We stayed at Novotel. It was less than 10 minutes by car (doorman at Novotel had one of their drivers run us over, don%26#39;t remember the exact cost). One night we walked down to the theatre to see Dirty Rotten Scoundrels. It%26#39;s about a 10 minute walk. We had an incredible view of Times Square from our window. Room was clean, comfortable and not small. There%26#39;s a ton of stuff to do in easy walking distance. We took a cab in from JFK. I%26#39;d recommend that, especially with all the lunggage one tends to drag along for a cruise.

Which itinerary are you doing? We did the eastern caribean. Enjoyed most of it but NYC was definitely the highlight of the whole trip.

We%26#39;re going on the Norwegian Dawn, which is the same ship you were on its going to Bermuda. Any suggestions for travelling on the Dawn? First time travelling Norwegian.

Restaurants near Holiday Inn Expess 232 West 29th st ?

Ok, stayed there last week and can recommend two places.

Home on 8th for great Chinese, $5.50 lunch specials. Take a left out of hotel and turn right onto 8th, it%26#39;s right there.

Sette very good Italian with a long lunch menu that ran from noon to 7pm and was $15.00 for app, entree and dessert. Take a right out of hotel, turn right onto 7th, couple blocks down on the left.

Also on 7th was a big Whole Foods Market.

    How was your stay?

Thanks so much for the advice.

Whole foods Market? I assume that%26#39;s a grocery store?

It was good thanks. Breakfast is very extensive.

Whole Foods is a market but they also have prepared foods, salads, soups, etc. Bought a large bottled water for 79 cents.

Check menupages for the Chelsea area that is how I found those two great restaurants.

Seven is also nice on 7th ave b/w 29-30.

    menupages.com/restaurantdetails.asp鈥?/a>

The immediate are around your hotel is not fabulous for dining but there%26#39;s enough if you pick carefully. If you head further south into Chelsea proper (lower 20%26#39;s and into the teens) you%26#39;ll find more. Have a quick read here

    Anyone seen ';Moon for the Misbegotten?';

    Howdy!

I%26#39;ll be in Manhattan in 18 days (oh my goodness, oh my goodness!!!!) by myself for 4 days so I%26#39;ll be hitting Broadway a lot. I grew up in the theatre and truly appreciate straight plays more than the average person, but I%26#39;m also a sucker for GOOD musicals. I have my ticket for ';Talk Radio'; already (can%26#39;t wait to see Liev Schreiber) and likely will go see ';Legally Blonde'; as well. That leaves me one open night. I%26#39;m VERY tempted to see ';A Moon for the Misbegotten'; because of Kevin Spacey, one of my favorite actors of all times, however, I%26#39;m worried that a 3-hour running time is a bit too long even for me (for a Eugene O%26#39;Neill show--very depressing). Has anyone seen that show (with or without Kevin Spacey) or heard anything in the last couple days since the previews started? My other thought at this time is ';Avenue Q'; but I have a feeling that%26#39;ll be touring soon...while ';Moon'; with Spacey won%26#39;t come around again...any advice???

    Anyone seen ';Moon for the Misbegotten?';

I have tickets for Moon in May. The production is just moving from London, and the reviews of the show are here. The entire cast is the same.

    www.whatsonstage.com/index.php鈥?/a>

    Anyone seen ';Moon for the Misbegotten?';

There%26#39;s a few reviews on the message board at Broadwayworld.com Lots are mixed and saying Spacey%26#39;s performance isn%26#39;t all that....and that Colm Meaney and Eve Best are standouts. I%26#39;m not sold on going to see it yet. Same goes for Frost/Nixon. I%26#39;m waiting to hear how the Coram Boy transfer sounds as well.

If you want a play...see Journey%26#39;s End...it%26#39;s the best reviewed play of the year so far and it was completely riveting, engrossing, and intense.

BroadwayGirl, I agree about Journeys End, too bad it is not selling better, it is absolutely fantastic.

Am seeing Frost/Nixon tonight, will report back.

Not really interested in Moon, KS is a bit pompous these days, don%26#39;t you think?

Complete shame that Journey%26#39;s End isn%26#39;t selling well....it truly is a great production..not a weak link in the cast.

With the salary Spacey got producers to pay him for this and the box office % take he was demanding....he%26#39;s definitely coming off a bit pompous! Many are saying this won%26#39;t recoup it%26#39;s producers investment.

I%26#39;m anxious to hear about Frost/Nixon since I%26#39;ve heard such mixed things....please do report back!

Hey BroadwayGirl - MFTM is up on TDF!!!!

I know!! And it%26#39;s for dates I can%26#39;t attend....same goes for the dates they posted for LoveMusik! At least I can try to get student rush for Moon.

Now if Coram Boy shows up on there..it better be for dates I can attend!

Thanks for the heads up though. I%26#39;ve been refreshing all afternoon in hopes I can catch one of the new things I%26#39;m interested in. I decided too late to try to snag Frost/Nixon tickets...they were gone.

    BroadwayGirl,

I saw Frost/Nixon in London with the same leading cast (Frank Langella %26amp; Michael Sheen) appearing in NYC. All I can say is Langella is phenomenal as Nixon. He really inhabits the role of Nixon. I remember watching the Watergate saga as a teenager as ';good ol%26#39; boy'; Sam Ervin chaired the judiary committee. Alas, my introduction of politics and corruption. Frost/Sheen comes into his own towards the ends of the production and it is he who claims redemption. I would definitely see this play again.

I saw Moon in London with Kevin Spacey and really enjoyed it. All the performances were fantastic. It was a bit too long, but the comedy moments lightened up the depressing nature. It was well regarded here.

I just saw it today. This is one of my favorite plays of all time (and I am a playwright) and I have seen numerous productions. Spacey is the best James Tyrone I have ever seen, hands down. The entire second act is incredible. He and Eve Best are well-matched and Colm Meaney is pitch-perfect. It won%26#39;t feel like three hours. See it. I%26#39;m sure you won%26#39;t regret it.

    Rachel in Weehawken

I saw it in London last fall. I felt it was long and depressing. My English friend loved it. Kevin Spacey really is amazing. I%26#39;d say go see it. I may try and catch it again to see if it hits me differently.

  • Standing in line for cancellations for Broadway shows????

I saw a message on another board about doing this and there were no instructions, but the poster said she got tickets to WICKED that way.

We will be in NYC 4/27-5/01 and are scheduled to see The Drowsey Chaperone and Phantom with a group. We plan on skipping Phantom and would love to see Mary Poppins and/or WICKED.

Standing in line for cancellations for Broadway shows????

Cancellations are sometimes available, but there are other options as well:

Standing in line for cancellations for Broadway shows????

Thanks Bettina, this might work for WICKED, but how will I find out about Mary Poppins? I just can%26#39;t make myself pay broker prices. We have gone to several shows in the Broadway Across America series in Birmingham, AL and WICKED is coming 08-09 season, and I can get a Season Ticket for what 1 broker ticket would cost me!

  • New York Nightlife & Flamenco

Hi, I%26#39;m looking for a lively restaurant to spend a few hours in with friends, good food, cocktails %26amp; atmosphere. I%26#39;ve been advised that Asia de Cuba or Le Coloniel might be the best options. Any recommendations?

Also does anyone know where i could see some live flamenco of a good standard?

    Thanks!

    New York Nightlife %26amp; Flamenco

Asia de Cuba is good with a decent sized group. Its family style, so going with 2 limits you... I havent been to the Le Colonial here, just Chicago. Asia de Cuba%26#39;s group also owns China Grill on 52nd and 6th - very similar menu.

There are so many great restaurants here, I dont know where to begin to make other suggestions. Do you want a particular area, Asian/fusion food? Buddakan is the hot place, and it was wonderful when I was there a month ago. Not the typical trendy place with mediocre food.

I know the flamenco photographer - Gilles Larrain. There%26#39;s usually a big flamenco festival here every year, but not sure when. There is some flamenco community here, because the dancers always show up at his parties...

    New York Nightlife %26amp; Flamenco

Thanks for the tip, Buddakan sounds good. Not interested in somewhere thats all style %26amp; no substance. As its a one off trip for 4 sisters it%26#39;s good to find the right places

I think the flamenco festival is on at the minute but unfortunately i wont be in NY for a couple of weeks. But those parties i%26#39;m sure can be eventful!

at the risk of mentioning something personal that will get the whole thread deleted - a good friend of mine recently broke up with him, or I would ask for more info about how you can find the flamenco scene!

No worries. I think my dance teacher is in NYC for a few gigs so will get an update from him before i go.

By the way, checked out Buddakan%26#39;s website there now. It looks just like my kind of place %26amp; nice menu. So thanks, great recommendation!

Your question on flamenco dancing got me curious. Check out this website for more info:

Also, Saks has an entire floor dedicated to plus sizes called ';Salon Z'; I believe it%26#39;s on the tenth floor, but there is a floor map on the first floor as well as customer service, so just ask. Saks is located on Fifth Avenue and 49th Street. My mom loves it up there and goes whenever she%26#39;s in town visiting me.

finally a hotel picked, now best way to get there....

We finally picked a hotel....thanks to Voyagereuse and NY Whiz...You both are so incredibly helpful and certainly help us NYC visiters enjoy our trips.

We chose the Beekman Towers. We are flying in to JFK. What are our best options getting to the hotel? What would the ';average'; cab ride be?

    There are 3 parties.....6 adults, 2 teens (17) and 3 children.

finally a hotel picked, now best way to get there....

If my math is correct, that%26#39;s 11. Your options, three cabs (possibly 2 if you can get a larger minivan type cab) The cab is a set rate of $45 + toll and tip. Budget about $60 for each cab. One thing is that cabs will not have child seats.

Alternatively, you could call a car service and see if they have a large van type vehicle that can accomodate all of you. You could also see if they have car seats

Last option, AirTrain to the subway (Take the E train to 53rd and Lexington. That would be $7.00 each. I know children under 44 inches don%26#39;t have to pay for the subway ($2.00). I honestly don%26#39;t know about the AirTrain (that is $5.00). The Beekman would be maybe a 10 minute walk from the hotel.

finally a hotel picked, now best way to get there....

    Thanks BobbyC.

When I say Children, their ages are 12, 10 and 10. Will they need car seats?

No child of any age (including an infant) is required to use a car seat in a taxi or livery car in New York State. Bobby was only suggesting an option if you thought you would like one, which you might have wanted for younger children.

When you say ';3 parties'; are you all travelling together on the same flight? Or are you arriving separately? That would change things greatly.

There%26#39;s no subway right near the Beekman Tower (which is a great hotel!!) If you%26#39;re all flying in at the same time, contact the various car services and get quotes for a minvan for all of you. Compare that to the cost of a taxi which will be ~$60 for up to 5 people and then decide. The usual cos. recommended are

    carmellimo.com

    dial7.com

    limores.net

We will all be arriving from the same flight. Where is the closest subway system to Beekman Towers? Also, is there any kid friendly restaurants that aren%26#39;t ridicoulously priced close by Beekman? They are really well behaved children, but they won%26#39;t want anything to fancy but would enjoy a good time.

The closest subway stop is at 53 st %26amp; Lexington where you can get the 6, V or the E. You%26#39;re also not far from Grand Central station (42 st %26amp; Lexington) where there are more lines. But wouldn%26#39;t consider using the train from JFK for your group since it will be $7/person with lots of lugging of cases.

As for eating, there are places in Grand Central station including Junior%26#39;s which is like a deli and famous for their cheesecake. Two Boots is a pizza place in there and closer to the hotel is a good pizza place called Angelo%26#39;s. Mama Mexico is a Mexican not far.

    reasonble palces to eat

can someone tell us of some reasonble eating places in or around the murryhill district we our staying at the bedford hotel on 118th and 40th

    reasonble palces to eat

I think you need to reread your post as that address doesn%26#39;t exist

    reasonble palces to eat

The address is 118 E. 40th, which is between Park-Lexington.

To clarify, the name of the street on which your hotel is located is East 40th Street (the ';East'; -- abbreviated as E. -- is a part of the name, and is VERY important for addresses, but in common conversation it would just be called ';40th Street';.)

The house number (as in Number 10 Downing Street) in this case is number 118.

The cross streets -- SOOOOO important when giving drections, especially on Avenues, which can stretch for seven or eight miles -- are Park Avenue and Lexington Avenue.

The neighborhood is Murray Hill, which is two words.

    You could tell a cab driver ';40th Street between Park and Lexington -- the Bedford Hotel, at 118 East 40th.';

And yes, you really should say all that to the driver.

The Black Sheep on 3rd Ave, around 39th has decent pub food. Reasonably priced, decent beer selection as well

You%26#39;re in a great area for food. Just walk over to Lexington Ave. and turn south. There are many neighborhood restaurants on Lexington south of 40th . I work near there and when we go to lunch we often end up on Lexington between 24-33 streets. Examples of good places are Curry Leaf (Indian, at 27th street, Le Petit Auberge (French, 116 Lexington, between 27 %26amp; 28), Turkish Kitchen (386 3rd Ave | Btwn 27th %26amp; 28th St ), Jaiya (Thai, 396 3rd Ave | At 28th St) and much more. If you keep going to 23rd street you can go to Live Bait (between Broadway %26amp; Madison) for a superb catfish sandwhich (it%26#39;s a bar with a restaurant). The streets are very short, it will only take you about 10-15 min to walk from 40th to 23rd.

Your hotel is very near Grand Central Terminal (42 st). For a nice meal, Metrazur. For inexpensive grab a bite, Junior%26#39;s like a deli (famous for their cheesecake) and Two Boots pizza.

For Mexican, El Rio Grande. Asia de Cuba in Morgans hotel is a trendy spot for drinks and appetizers or a dinner. Gets very crowded after work. The Shelburne Murray Hill hotel is not far from yours and has a rooftop bar with nice views. If the weather is good, nice spot to sit. Also inside Grand Central is the Campbell Apartments, another good spot for a drink.

PS., just a few doors down from your hotel is Au Bon Pain, decent place for breakfast, lunch or take away. Sarge%26#39;s deli is also good for breakfast or sandwiches.

  • Marriage At New York City Hall

We%26#39;re planning to get married in New York in 2 weeks at City Hall. We will be on our own so how to we go about getting a witness. Do City hall have personnel that can act as a witness for us?

    ST london

Marriage At New York City Hall

No they don%26#39;t. You%26#39;ll be able to ask someone in the queue to do it for you, at least they%26#39;ll have ID with them (if they%26#39;re either getting married themselves or witnessing for someone else)

Marriage At New York City Hall

You don%26#39;t get married or get your license at City Hall. You get married at the Municipal Builsing, across the street, east of City Hall.

You can get married (or just get the license) at any of the five Borough Halls in NYC.

    nycmarriagebureau.com/MarriageBureau/index.h鈥?/a>

Also, NO CREDIT CARDS to pay the fee. You MUST get a MONEY ORDER, which you can get at a post office, bank or check-cashing kiosk. Do this in advance.

If you search, there are a number of posts describing the experience of getting married at the City Clerk%26#39;s offices in Manhattan, Brooklyn, and Staten Island. (One can also do it in Queens and the Bronx, but I have never seen a post about thos locations.) Of the three, the experience at the Staten Island office seemed to be the most pleasant for the couple involved, and the building was the nicest one on the inside. The main issue, of course, is the inconvenient distance -- you need to go across to Staten Island, either by ferry or another way, although Staten Island Borough Hall is quite close to the ferry terminal.

Also be aware that you must get your license at least 24 hours before the actual ceremony. You do not have to get the license at the same office of the Clerk where you will be married; you may get the license in one borough and get married the next day in another.

Hi there, we got married at Staten Island three weeks ago (doesn%26#39;t time fly !) You can pick up our trip reports by searching for other posts on my log in name. Thankfully we managed to avoid the issue of finding a witness as Ange was there at the same time as us and volounteered !

Staten Island is much nicer than Brooklyn or Manhattan but not sure how easy you would find a witness as it%26#39;s not very busy.

Hope you have a lovely time - we didn%26#39;t stop smiling all day !

Has anyone been to Gordan Ramsay / London Bar recently?

I have made a reservation at Gordon Ramsay the night we arrive in the city. They only had 10.30pm available.

However reading reviews on TA I am now wondering if I would have been better booking the London bar instead? Especially if hubby can get away with no jacket in the London bar.

He loves Gordon Ramsay and has recently finished his autobiography but I don%26#39;t fancy coaxing him into a jacket at 10pm.

Has anyone been to Gordan Ramsay / London Bar recently?

Ange will tell you more as she has been recently but if you are eating in the restaurant then he will need a jacket, I know because I%26#39;ve recently booked for next month and have checked.

Has anyone been to Gordan Ramsay / London Bar recently?

Thanks Puddleduck2. If he can get away with jeans in the bar he might prefer than at 10.30pm after a long flight. I can%26#39;t even ask him yet because it is a surprise and he doesn%26#39;t even know we are going.

I might make a reservation in the bar (if I can) too and then cancel one nearer the time.

I think you%26#39;re very brave going on your first night there - I fully expect to be asleep by 10.30 on my first night ;0)

We loved the food in the dining room (can%26#39;t comment on the bar) but I remember walking through the bar on my way back from the toilet and feeling pleased we hadn%26#39;t booked to eat in there. It%26#39;s a huge, noisy space whereas the dining room only has 14 (I think) tables and it feels as if you%26#39;re part of some exclusive little club.

Definitely worth putting a jacket on for IMO.

Thanks Ange. We will have to try and get some kip on the plane and hit the pro plus!

Definitely! What time do you get in?

Just remembered that this is a suprise for your hubby isn%26#39;t it! I%26#39;m sure he%26#39;lll do you a favour in return and wear a jacket for a few hours!

We land at 4pm. So possibility we could get our heads down for a couple of hours before dinner if we needed to.

Yes he will just be thrilled to be going.

ange we are going for lunch in the restaurant at Gordon Ramsay, do men need to wear a suit or would jeans and a smart jacket be OK??

You might just be too excited MSC, plus you%26#39;ve got to cram in as much as poss!

Manwell, I%26#39;d say you%26#39;d be ok with smart jeans + shirt + jacket for lunch but you%26#39;d be better to check with them first.

Hi - we ate in the restaurant on the evening of our wedding and it was fab !

Enjoyed it so much we went back and ate in the bar on the following evening - the food was good but worked out more expensive than the restaurant and it was very noisy. Also service was a bit erratic.

ok, ive researched this topic to death and cant come up with any solid info about where the show was actually shot. we are looking for the exterior shots of her apartment on SATC. there seems to be a huge dispute about where it actually is. we know it is not on the upper west side as was said numerous times in the show, but it is indeed somewhere in the village.

we would take the SATC tour, but our time is all taken up for this trip and we wont be able to do it. we just wanted a few photos of it. we%26#39;ll be doing alot of walking in soho / tribeca / the village so we will eventually come across it. TIA fellow SATC fans!!

thanks ange, you receive the quickest response to a question award for this month!! lol

just and awkward question, did you %26#39;pose%26#39; for a photo as well? dont want to be the only tourist chased off of perry street for trespassing!!

I%26#39;d like to thank my agent, my director and most importantly.... myself.

    LOL!

I know they let you pose on the stoop on the SATC tour but it seems people are too embarrassed when they%26#39;re just there alone! I suppose it depends how quiet the street is? And maybe if you%26#39;ve got the camera set and ready to go so you can make a run for it? Good luck!

I went to Carries place at about 10am on a sunday morning and the neighbourhood was dead, so I stood at the bottom of the stoop for my photo, no worries. The friends building is also nearby if you%26#39;re interested. Bedford st I think it is.

I recently took the SITC tour and we were asked to be quiet and respectful of the neighbors and then it would be no problem to take a picture.

If you make it to the neighborhood, the Magnolia Bakery, where the girls ate cupcakes on the show is right around the corner from Carrie%26#39;s apartment at 401 Bleecker Street. The park across the street from Magnolia Bakery is where they shot scenes of Miranda and her baby. You might remember the scene where Miranda trips and falls when Steve is introducing his new girlfriend.

lol got my sneakers on ange.........

przyk..... yes just found the place on google maps and realized last month we went to magnolia bakery just for the cupcakes after seeing the girls there, had i been a good SATC student, I would have known those other facts also...duh!!

oh well, just the excuse i needed to go back for more cupcakes!!

feel free to divulge any other SATC info you care to.....i know the series almost word for word!!

The tour really was fun and if I had not taken the tour I would not have known any of this either. I still have visions of the Upper East and West side as I watch the shows, even though I learned a lot of the locations are in and around trhe Village.

I%26#39;m dragging this old post out again (just for you buca!)

O Nieals bar and restaurant (174 Grand Street) - This features a lot as its Steve and Aidens bar in the series, you can go for a drink or food. Casual Smart clothes.

Commune 22nd St - nice restaurant although a very limited menu - sat outside for food. Inside the bar was nice, long with bar stools (my fav) This is where the girls had lunch when samantha was doing PR for the 13 year old girls Barmitzvah and the 13yr old paid for their lunch. I think it also featured in kate and Leopold. Now it appears to be Rocco Dispiritos new restaurant -

Petes Tavern - Speakeasy bar on 18th Street, Pub food and good beer, where Miranda asked Steve to marry her while sitting outside at a table drinking beer form a mug.

Tortilla Flats - Washington Street - fabulous loud bar dead casual, young clientele good mexican food, pitchers of margaritas. Its where Carrie , Miranda Aiden and Steve went for dinner. Its in the meat packing district which is near to Pastis a Keith Mcnally restaurant.

Pastis 12th St and 9th Avenue, You would need to book Pastis for food, not a place to go for drinks as its always rammed. Pastis is where Carrie meets Andre and they chat with his russian friends, while Carrie cant understand a word and finds out he is going to france for a show.

Florent - 69 Gansvoort (same area as Pastis and Tortilla Flats) - Miranda and Tom (Big boned) from weight watchers class go here. I havent been here yet, but am visiting NY tomorrow so I hope to be going on Sunday. It looks like a nice cheap place to eat and has hosted some rowdy drag queen protests.

Meet - 73 Gansvoort, Where Carrie goes for a blind date and gets stood up. A really nice place for drinks

Staten Island Ferry - Go at Dusk to see the views of the Island - This trip featured in the show where Carrie goes to Staten Island to judge a sexy fireman competition and where she meets her politician boyfriend
