Macsurfers arrived! ';live'; Trip Report Part 1

Well the great thing about the Blakely on W55th is free wi-fi in the room, hence me writing this now! Expect a hotel report when we%26#39;re done here.

I%26#39;m aiming to post daily our experiences as first time Brits in NYC.

We had a good flight yeaterday with continental Manchester UK to Newark.

Used the Dial7 car service which we%26#39;d pre-booked from the U

K. A little disappointed. The beige minivan was rather scruffy and the driving a bit scary. The inattentive driver swerved, braked hard, and mowed down a whole row of bollards at the Holland Tunnel entrance!! Thank god they were not concrete. I%26#39;m sure you%26#39;ll tell me this was just normal NY driving! The rain didn%26#39;t help. The driver was however helpful and did apologise at the hotel.

Not disappointed by the Blakely. Helpful staff changed room for us with no problem (more in review later) we of course woke up at 4AM this morning (9AM UK). Eventually got up at 6 and went to the gym in the hotel, leaving Joseph our 12 year old with the TV!

Now planning to go Downtown, possibly Skyscraper Museum and NY Police museum, GZ, SI Ferry etc.

I%26#39;d just like to thank the regulars on here. GWB, Bettina, QB, NYCGirl etc.

Macsurfers arrived! ';live'; Trip Report Part 1

I love ';as they%26#39;re happening'; reports! Sounds like a ride on the dodgems on the way to the hotel, rather you than me. Have fun, and paint the town all shades of colours

Macsurfers arrived! ';live'; Trip Report Part 1

Enjoy yourself Macsurfer, looking forward to reading more.

Don%26#39;t forget to stop at St. Paul%26#39;s Chapel while you%26#39;re wandering downtown.

Let us know how it goes.

I needed a translation for ';bollard.'; ;) Have fun!

We fly with Continental from Manchester next wednesday. Could you tell me what entertainment was on board. Was it seat back movies or is it just up on tv%26#39;s dotted around the cabin. I need to know whether I need to take a book to read.

Have a good time

Ann

A bollard is a post usually about 3 to 4 feet tall designed to keep cars from crashing through something. The are frequently used in parking lots instead of those curb stops we used to see. A non-permanent bollard are the kind used at the Holland Tunnel. They are used to direct people into lanes of traffic, usually a merge. (Sorry for the technical answer but I am actually working on a design of a shopping center right now that involves bollards!)

Macsurfer: Have a great time and enjoy all of the areas this magnificent city has to offer. I%26#39;m looking forward to lunch in Manhattan tomorrow with my three kids, then off to LaGuardia! Moms

Macsurfer- I hope you and your family enjoy your trip, and just a reminder, DO NOT GO in any shadowy places early in the morning.(LOL)

Holy crap! That%26#39;s awful! What an idiot. Glad no one was hurt.

PLEASE, you MUST report this to Dial 7. It is very important to report unsafe driving.

Raining, shmaining - that is inexcusable.

Thank you for the update and looking forward to more!!

Incidentally, the term used for those hinged white things that you see around tollbooths and tunnel entrances is ';flapping ducks'; -- presumably from their resemblance to duckpins (like bowling pins) rather than their similarity to waterfowl.

Macsurfer: A study came out today that ranked New York City drivers among the safest in the Country. I forget who conducted the study but it was based at least in part on the total number of accidents and fatalities from accidents. The safest cities to drive in are Des Moines, Iowa, Jersey City, New Jersey (home of the entrance to the Holland Tunner) and New York, New York. The least safe city is Columbia, South Carolina. Go figure!

A taxi or limo driver who mows down anything is totally unacceptable. Please, on behalf of all of us who drive in the city or ride in a car that is driven in the city, report him to the car service you used. They should know about this driver!

Hope your first day in NYC was great! Hopefully you will have warmer days in the days to come! Moms
