Long Island to Bronx Stadium to see Yankee game

I decided today we are going to take our first trip to NY. We are going to fly to Long Island from Chicago because it is so cheap right now. We want to also see Central Park and Times Square etc while we are there. Question is- how do we get around? Where should we stay-- Long Island and rent a car? Or some where by Cenral Park? Can you take public transportation from Long Island to the game and everywhere else??

Thanks!

Islip MacArthur Airport is about the same distance from New York City that Naperville is from Kenosha, WI, or Rockford IL. The main difference is that there in between Islip and the places you would like to see you have more people than live in the entire city of Chicago, which makes the drive a bit more of a project. In other words, the idea of staying out there and renting a car to drive back and forth (and to the BRONX???) is absolutely insane.

At the risk of sounding harsh, your question suggests to me that you have done no planning for this trip at all, including such basic things as looking at a map. Your idea as sketched out above is a recipe for misery and disaster -- you really do need to start with basics, including getting a map, and a guide book, and figuring out how much you plan on spending on hotels, and where you want to stay, and what you want to do.

I%26#39;m not sure of the time of year that you plan on being here, but at the risk of offending the native Long Islanders...there%26#39;s not too much to do here (compared to the city) unless it%26#39;s summer and you want to check out the beaches and vineyards.

I recommend that you take a taxi to the nearest train station (probably Ronkonkoma) and take the LIRR into Penn Station. There%26#39;s probably special airport to city services you can use but I%26#39;ve never had to go into the city from MacArthur so I don%26#39;t know about them. Find a hotel in the city, and travel the rest of the way by taxi or subway. If you want to stick to Manhattan, you%26#39;ll probably be fine walking. There%26#39;s no reason to get a car, even if you want to travel out to some of the boroughs.

Look at a map. Islip airport is over an hour east of Manhattan (Central Park, Times Square etc.) So it makes no sense to stay on Long Island for any of the things you mention (seeing Manhattan or going to a Yankees game).

The most common reason for out of towners to use Islip airport is b/c they have a free ticket on Southwest. I suppose depending on how many of you there are and what the price difference is b/w flying into Islip or using the normal NYC airport options of LGA, JFK and EWR, it may be worth your while to fly into Islip. Your options to get into Manhattan are

%26gt;a cab/car service which will run $80-120 each way,

%26gt;taking a bus to the Ronkonkoma train station and taking the LIRR to Penn Station (about $15/person I%26#39;d guess) or

%26gt;renting a car one way and dropping it in Manhattan. (You don%26#39;t need a car in Manhattan).

Getting to Yankee Stadium from Manhattan is easy by subway or even the fun ferry from Manhattan. For more detailed travel instructions for Yankee Stadium
