Macsurfer's ';live '; Trip Report Part 3

Friday 6th:

Well Althea (my wife) has brought her pedometer with her. Yesterday was 14000 steps and today 13000! (Thats about 7.5 miles) No wonder my feet are sore! And that%26#39;s with using our MetroCard a lot!

We took the subway across to Roosevelt Island first thing, it was very cold but good views of Manhattan. We walked to the southern tip, past the ruined smallpox hospital (Very ScoobyDoo!)

The main reason for going to the Island was to ride the Roosevelt Tram (Note to Brits: Its a cable car) This took us back to Manhattan with good aerial views. You can use your MetroCard.

Time for some retail therapy and a coffee to warm us up, so we headed for Bloomies. To continue the architectural theme we passed Then we darted into the Waldorf-Astoria for a look at the lobby. Decided to go up a lift for fun and have a wander and a look out some upper windows.

Then to Grand Central Terminal for some pictures and another coffee (and lunch) in the downstairs cafe area. Took some good photos of details of the Beaux-arts building. Scots should note a big Scottish Tourist Board exhibition in the foyer, note as in, give it a miss unless you hanker after bagpipes and old guys with long beards!!

At last the sun was out! Time to photograph the Chrysler, and go in the foyer (unlike the Woolworth you can!) Again fabulous architectural (ArtDeco) detailing inside.

Headed for St.Patricks Cathedral. I%26#39;d forgotten it was Good Friday and there was a service on. Tourists were milling about quietly.

I decided to stay and listen for a bit (fabulous singer) but lost the rest of the family. Found Althea upset out front 20 minutes later. I was in the doghouse then for losing her. Right, my fault then.

After kissing and making up we did a bit more retail in Banana Republic and Gap, although our heart really wasn%26#39;t in it, I especially, was flagging.

Had our ';dinner'; in Au Bon Pain across the road from the Blakely.

A good find, lots of healthyish food. (Apparently we have them in London)

After a rest in the hotel we caught the last hour of the free night at MOMA. Very busy, felt like a private view with all the people. I tend to spend more time oin galleries looking at the building than the art and this was no exception (Although I loved the photography by Jeff Wall (?))

Early night, only spoiled by noisy neighbours with loud music and shouting at 1230am! Check out Part 4 tomorrow!

Ok, so are you enjoying yourselves?

If you like Art Deco, I am sure you are noticing all the wonderful sculptural details scattered through Rockefeller Center. Another fabulous Deco building is the old General Electric building at the corner of Lexington and 51st Street -- wonderful details everywhere, all with an ';electricity'; theme.

For Beaux Arts, check out the Library at Fifth and 42nd, and the Customs House (now the American Indian musuem) at Bowling Green.

And have you found the cast-iron facade buildings yet down between Chambers and Houston?

Interesting. I was going to do that as well but everytime I looked in that direction I saw no trams. Thought maybe they were down for repairs.

Or is it that they hold them in their stations until the occasional passengers show up?

GWB, I also was thinking of the old GE Building. It%26#39;s an often overlooked gem! While you%26#39;re in the neighborhood, another fabulous lobby is the Daily News Bldg. on E. 42nd Street, which was used as the lobby of the Daily Planet in the Superman movies. (I think it%26#39;s 120 E. 42nd, between Lex-Third?)

macsurfer, isn%26#39;t it time you treated your wife to a pedicure? Sounds like you could both use a little foot pampering.

NYCGirl: Yes we are; sorry if it doesn%26#39;t come across, but we are having a fab time!

Thanks for info GWB, TOTR is tonight, just before dusk. we missed the Cast Iron district the other day, but we%26#39;ll go back.

TravellingGuy: We also thought they weren%26#39;t running, but they probably spend more time at each end, than in the air since the trip is only 15 minutes. I read somewhere that the trams hold 125 people. Yeah right, that%26#39;ll be 125 quarter-scale people then :)

Bettina, well she keeps mentioning Nail bars but you are probably right. Maybe I%26#39;ll give her a foot massage tonight!
