I'm planning a walking tour

Would like to take a subway from lower manhatten to brooklyn and walk the bridge back . Which subway should I take? Also would like to walk the Promenade in Brooklyn Heights and then go to the Brooklyn Botanical Gardens. (or vice versa) Is this do-able?

Is this route a safe one to walk?

Would appreciate advice and suggestions.

I'm planning a walking tour

I would recommend taking the subway to Brooklyn and walking the bridge back to Manhattan, as many tourists prefer to view the skyline of the city.

To visit the bklyn promenade, take the 2 or 3 subway lines (red line) to Clark Street, which is the first subway stop in Brooklyn. Once you come out of the station, follow Clark St. (walk toward Hicks St) and you will run right into it. You may also wish to take a look at the main shopping area of Brooklyn Heights, which is Montague Street.

Here are two links about walking in this area, as well as specific subway directions to entrances in manhattan or brooklyn:

The botanical garden is not close to brooklyn heights, so it will depend on how much time you wish to spend in Brooklyn. It is, however, off the same subway line - take the 2 or 3 subway line to Eastern Parkway. Once you get off, you will have the bklyn museum of art and the botanical garden entrances at your convenience.

If you wish to visit both areas during your trip, visit the botanical gardens first, then hop on the subway and take in the promenade afterwards. From there, it is an easy walk back over the Brooklyn Bridge.

It is safe to walk in these areas. One word of caution for tourists, though. Be certain to be cognizant of the pedestrian part of the walkway on the brooklyn bridge (the walkway is divided by a line - bicycle path on one side, pedestrian path on the other). Cyclists in NYC get very annoyed when people aimlessly wander into their path (which is rather prone to happen due to the amazing views). I have seen a number of people almost get hit by speedy cyclists鈥?/p>
