Where should we stay

Possibly flying in for 1 day to take my family to Yankee stadium in August. Would be flying in to Laguardia. Have heard staying anywhere near the stadium is not a good or safe choice ? Where would be a good and affordable place to stay and best transportation to the stadium ?

Where should we stay

Any place near the subway lines that go to the stadium -- the #4 runs on the east side along Park Ave. between lower Manhattan and Grand Central (42nd St.) and from there up runs along Lexington Ave. The B and D lines run along 6th Ave. on the west side. Both the #4 and the B-D go to Yankee Stadium.

What kind of budget are you looking at?

Where should we stay

Have a look at the subway map (which shows both LGA %26amp; Yankee stadium)

http://www.mta.info/nyct/maps/submap.htm

Your choices are stay

%26gt;some place near La Guardia and rent a car (no subway near LGA)

%26gt;any place in Manhattan near a subway that goes to the stadium

Another option to consider is flying into EWR (is this possible?) and staying at the Sheraton on the Hudson in Weehawken, NJ. There%26#39;s a ferry near there that goes to Yankee stadium.

There%26#39;s also a ferry there that goes across the river to Manhattan if you want to. But this option doesn%26#39;t make a lot of sense (imo) from LGA.

Thanks for the responses - I should probably have been more specific.

For my son%26#39;s granduation / 18th Birthday, we are going on a cruise out of Miami. My husband and 2 boys are HUGE Yankee fans and want to see Yankee stadium before it gets demolished. Since we can%26#39;t really plan 2 big trips this year, we thought we would try to sneak in MY at the end of our cruise but we don%26#39;t have much time - so our plan is to get off the ship in Miami on 8/3 and fly to NY arriving in the evening. Go to a Yankee game on the 4th in the middle of the day - stay the night and fly home early 8/5.

So you see, I have a couple of things that make me a bit nervous not knowing NY at all....

* We are arriving in the evening and want to be able to get to our hotel easily and safely

*We want to be able to travel to the Stadium without too much difficulty or cost.

* Since it is an early game, we will want to go out somewhere to eat but I%26#39;m told we will want to get out of the Stadium area asap.

* Our flight will leave early the next day so we will want easy access to Laguardia.

I have not checked the other airports as Lagurdia seemed to be the closest to the stadium and cheapest to fly into.

We want to stay at a decent and safe place but do not require high class - I would like to stay if at all possible under $150 night - With this detour to NY the trip is beginning to cost way more than we have saved for but it is our only opportunity to see Yankee stadium so we are going to bite the bullet -

I appreciat eall the hjelp I can get from you NY experts !! Thank you -

wanted to bumpthis possibly for a few more pieces of advice after my reply -

Thank you

hmmm - you might want to consider staying at one of the LaGuardia hotels -- such as the Sheraton LaGuardia East or the Best Western Queens court -- that are in fact NOT at LaGuardia itself, but are in downtown Flushing within walking distance of the Main Street stop of the #7 subway.

If you do this, you can have dinner that night at any of the great Chinese or Korean restaurants in Flushing.

The next day, each of you should get the unlimited use one-day MetroCard ($7 each) Take the #7 the next day into Manhattan, and at Grand Central (which will take 30 minutes from Main Street) change for the #4 heading uptown. Twenty minutes after that you will arrive at Yankee Stadium.

On the way home, or on the way into town if you are early enough, you can get off at Grand Central and admire the building, and also check out the immediate neighborhood if you like. Get back on the #7 and go to 74th Street, where you will find both Indian and South American restaurants that you might enjoy. Get back on the #7 and return to Main Street for the night. Make sure that the hotel can arrange for a car the next morning to take you to the airport -- about a ten minute trip.

I would think the trip would be most worthwhile if you stayed in Manhattan. It%26#39;s not that far from LGA and it%26#39;s a lot easier to get to the stadium on the subway from there vs. out in Queens. But you will NEVER find a decent room for the 4 of you for under $150. That just doesn%26#39;t happen any more. Also, depending on the size of the boys and how willing they are to share a bed, you may have a hard time finding a room where you%26#39;ll all be comfortable period, let alone for under $150.

The Newton is a decent budget hotel on the upper west side (nearish) the stadium, but even there, a room with 2 queens on those nights is ~$235 plus tax (15%). I don%26#39;t think you%26#39;ll do much better than that for space and price in Manhattan.

The Affinia hotels (www.affinia.com) are all suite hotels with good reputation. For those dates, there are good prices at the Shelburne Murray Hill and the Eastgate Tower-either of which would be fine for travel. But the best prices are for studio suites and it%26#39;s not clear what size bed(s) you%26#39;d get. Also the best prices are non-cancellable. You might want to phone them about the bed sizes if you%26#39;re interested.

Finally, my suggestion of the Sheraton on the Hudson in Weehawken actually looks like a possibility. On quikbook.com a room for 4 there is $179/night. What you%26#39;d have to weigh is whether the extra cost to get there from LGA will eat up the savings vs. staying in Manhattan. (I think it might-a taxi from LGA to Manhattan is ~ $35. A car service from LGA to New Jersey will be at least $80 in each direction).

Dear NYWhiz,

Thanks for more info - The more I look at the it, I%26#39;m thinking I like the Hudson Sheraton idea and using the ferry as opposed to trying to maneuver the subway system. To be honest, this part of the trip is rather starting to rattle my nerves thinking about all the hustle and bustle of getting around. - I see what you are saying about the cost of getting to the hotel from LGA so what if I flew into Newark like you suggested earlier ? Is that an easy jaunt to the hotel ?

Lastly, if we do stay there...once the game is over on SA, would you suggest we go back to the Hotel area to eat or would you suggest somewhere else where we won%26#39;t get too turned around in getting back to the hotel later. We do not need anything fancy or ethnic as my kids would not enjoy that at all.

This is all so odd to me...I%26#39;m just used to loading my kids in the Suburban, driving to the ballgame and paying $7 for parking, booking a $95 a night hotel room closest to the field, and walking across the street to Chilis for dinner :-) - NY may be a little stressful for me :-)

It would be the same ';easy jaunt'; from Newark airport to the Sheraton on the Hudson as it would be from LGA airport to any hotel in Manhattan. To my knowledge there%26#39;s no easy public transportation from Newark to the hotel so you%26#39;d be taking a taxi (or you could rent a car and drive). You%26#39;d take a taxi from LGA to get into Manhattan to a hotel there and it would likely cost less.

If you were to stay in Weehawken, where you%26#39;d eat would depend on how you were traveling. While that ferry is much nicer than the subway or driving in traffic, it does take longer. I think most people would take it in one direction and use something faster in the other. But staying in NJ, I%26#39;m not sure, apart from driving which wouldn%26#39;t work, what other option you%26#39;d have.

As I think about the logistics, the only reason to stay there is price. It would be a lot simpler to fly into LGA and stay in Manhattan. The idea of staying in Queens, somewhere near the airport is an option, but it seems such a long schlepp to get back there after the game and most of the hotels don%26#39;t have much near them. If you were going to Shea (which is almost next to LGA) I could see it.

If you really want to go to Yankee stadium, pay the money and stay in Manhattan.

Do not be afraid of using the subway! Your kids are teenagers, they would probably love the adventure, and many visitors report no difficulty and plenty of helpful New Yorkers! This could be a really memorable trip for your family and one they will remember for years!

OK - So now it looks like Manhattan is the better choice. As it was said earlier in the thread, is it best for me to look for a decent priced hotel near the #4, B, or D ? If so, any good recommendations ? I have been looking up hotels but I can%26#39;t tell how close they are to where I need to go.

Here%26#39;s another twist I did not mention before....There is a good possibility that 2 other families may travel with us for a total of 11 people. Is there a better way to get to the Hotel and bacl to the airport than trying to get 3 Taxis ?

You can%26#39;t even imagine how much I appreciate all of this help !!
