restaurant for relaxed dinner proximity Hilton New York

Arrive New York City late afternoon Friday to meet our Columbia Law student son for (hopefully) relaxed dinner , close to Hilton New York (west 54%26#39;th and 6%26#39;th ave.). Anyone have suggestions for restaurant? Would like fairly quiet atmosphere-- Thanks for the help--

Being close to the theatre district. . many restaurants around 54th might be busy till 8:00 when diners leave for the theatre. My husband and I live around the Hilton and I could suggest a place called Caffe Cielo on West 53rd and Eigth avenue. Close by to you. It is fairly quiet and the food is really good. We actually eat there alot since we live so close. They won%26#39;t rush you out either! It%26#39;s been there a long time since we lived in the area, and it gets alot of regulars. We have seen Paul Shaffer in there a few times. . . On a Friday night most good restaurants in the city tend to get busy especially till 8:00 - just ask for a quiet table when you make a reservation.

Have a nice time with your son!

Here are a few favorites in the area. You can read reviews and see sample menus on www.menupages.com. (Most of the prices are outdated though).

Town

Beacon

Milos, Estiatorio

Abboccato

Petrossian

Brasserie Ruhlmann

You don%26#39;t mention price. There are some very nice places that haven%26#39;t been mentioned yet, but they%26#39;re expensive. Michaels on 54 st b/w 5th %26amp; 6th is very quiet at dinner. They are very busy at breakfast and lunch.

The China Club is almost across the street from your hotel. Upscale Chinese.

The new Gordon Ramsey restaurant (in the London hotel) is very close.

Whiz...if you mean China Grill... it%26#39;s not quiet, it%26#39;s loud...but fun.

Thanks so much for the suggestions! I will check them out on menupages.com.

nywhiz: You actually helped me out almost two years ago when we were moving our son to New York to begin Columbia Law--I had questions then about navigating U-Hauls in NY city traffic and about parking in his neighborhood of Morningside Heights. It%26#39;s great to hear from you again--thanks for the assist then and now.

Gosh, I remember you! How did you make out with driving that U Haul and how is he doing??

Voy is absolutely correct, as usual. I meant the China Grill and it%26#39;s loud.

nywhiz: We actually did not end up with a U-Haul--took all but 3 seats out of our minivan and fit everything in and on top of it--it was so heavy the underside was almost dragging the ground! And after navigating NYC traffic, we were glad we didn%26#39;t have the U-Haul. Our son is doing great--thank you for asking--loves New York (except the weather this winter). Thanks again for the advice--
