hello
im travelling to New york later in the year with 5 friends, cant wait and im sure we%26#39;ll have great time, however, we are staying in Secaucus and would like to know the best way of geting there from JFK. I dont know what time we arrive, so just a general answer will be fine. Would it be possible to get a minibus/ shuttle of some sort, or would the subway train be better?
thanks in advance
From JFK to Secaucus?!
This is an awful trip and imo, an awful idea. If you insist on staying in Secaucus you should either rent a car for the whole trip (Secaucus is a pain to get around) OR fly into Newark airport.
If you%26#39;re just looking for less expensive hotels than Manhattan, there are LOTS better options than Secaucus, especially if you%26#39;re coming in and out of JFK.
There is NO minibus or anything really to get you from JFK to Secaucus. All options involve going first to Manhattan (train, bus, taxi) and from there, train or bus to Secaucus. I%26#39;ll also add there are DOZENS of hotels in Secaucus and not all are near the same transportation so a general answer will do you no good. Some of the hotels are a long walk to ANY public transport and require a minivan from your hotel. So.....in the absence of more detail, I suggest you pose this question to your hotel or look on their website.
From JFK to Secaucus?!
ok, thanks.
unfortunately the trip is booked allready, one of my friends booked it, thanks for the heads up though, ill make sure we get it sorted before we go.
thank you
Forgot, here%26#39;s a page prepared by poster Broadwaynyc that lists info on getting from various Secaucus hotels into Manhattan.

If your hotel is listed, you can reverse the directions and just figure out how you get to Manhattan from JFK. With a group of 5, assuming you don%26#39;t rent a car (which, I kid you not, might be a good plan for getting around in New Jersey), a car service will be the best idea.

does a shuttle between JFK and Newark airport, but I think the per person cost (~$24) would make it silly for a group of 5. THey might give you a price for a private trip for you 5.
Is there a way to get at of staying in Secaucus, often you can cancel hotels with no charge before a trip? I would REALLY look into that. You will be hating your friend for doing this to you by day 2, by day 5 there may need to be a police report filed.
Seriously, this is not a good idea and the cost savings of the hotel will be more than eaten up by the cost of transportation to and from the city.
well i was looking forward to my trip, up to about 10 minutes ago, then i read your posts. Im going to have to get this sorted, thanks alot to you all for bringing this to my attention,
many thanks!
Staying in Secaucus (often pronounced by locals as ';See-caucus';) wouldn%26#39;t be my first choice but it isn%26#39;t the end of the world, either. New Jersey Transit runs many busses into Manhattan. Assuming your hotel is near the bus stop (which is likely -- but double check with the hotel) you%26#39;ll be OK as long as you avoid rush hour, by which I mean going into the city after 9:00 AM and avoiding coming back between say, 5:00-7:00. Be aware that off-peak busses may only run hourly, but they probably run until midnight most days. Ask the hotel what bus you should take into NYC, they will probably be able to tell you.
If you can change your reservation I would do it, but don%26#39;t kill your friend if you can%26#39;t!
As far as getting to Secaucus from JFK goes, I%26#39;d hire a car service or, as someone else suggested, fly into Newark (EWR) instead. Any other option will involve transfers.
just been checking up with my friend, there is apparently a shuttle service to secaucus station, and theres an express bus from outside the hotel, they have stayed there before and said it worked out fine. we%26#39;ll have to see, thanks anyway for the info. Really looking forward to the trip, we coming over Nov 1st-Nov 7th. So will be there to watch the marathon, is it really hard to get around when the marathon is on?
Ianbrown82, I stay at the Crowne Plaza in Secaucus every year in October and part of the thrill of it all is the bus ride into Manhattan, the sights and smell of the city I like to call it. A two-minute walk from the hotel to the bus stop. Unless you are the type to shop and carry lots of parcels, I found it no bother as we were on the go all day sightseeing anyway. Most times I do take the car into the city and park but it is pricey, that is the night we go to the broadway sho.w. Do have a great trip wherever you decide to stay.
Although it wouldn%26#39;t be my first choice of a place to stay while visiting NYC, Secaucus (yes, locally often pronounced SEE-caw-cuss) is not actually too far from Manhattan. And it%26#39;s certainly more cost effective. There are express buses and NJ transit has a new major hub there. There are very frequent trains to Secaucus from Penn Station. If I were you, before you go, I%26#39;d check with the hotel regarding your options - when and where the buses leave from and train schedules and the like. Rush hour, generally, you will be better on the train than in a bus. During off hours, a bus ride from Secaucus really shouldn%26#39;t take more than a half hour to midtown. If you%26#39;re familiar before you go with your options, you%26#39;ll avoid finding yourself having to pay for a cab/car if you%26#39;re stuck somewhere. Don%26#39;t let the responses here put a damper on your trip - it%26#39;ll be fine. The most difficult part of the whole thing is going to be getting to/from JFK. Your best bet, short of incurring the expense of a car to/from the airport, will be using public transportation to Manhattan and then going from Manhattan to JFK. It will take a while. Be sure to leave yourself plenty (really) of time on the way back to the airport!
Have fun!
