Broadway question?

We went to see Pirate Queen Saturday night. The main reason we decided on this show was becasue of Stephanie J. Block. Just our luck she was not performing Saturday night. Her stand in did the show instead. We are curious, what is the difference between a stand in and an understudy? All the main parts had understudies listed but this was the only part with a stand in listed.

I enjoyed the show but my daughters were very dissapolinted that Stephanie J. Block was not there as they really liked her from Wicked. My husband did not enjoy the show, it just wasn%26#39;y his type of show.

Broadway question?

I think a stand in only covers one part but understudies generally are part of the chorus too?

Broadway question?

I remember a discussion of this over on talkinbroadway with people disagreeing over what the terms standby and understudy mean......

Usually, stand bys usually cover for one role..usually for a star or for a major role. They are not part of the ensemble playing another part in the show...that%26#39;s what%26#39;s usually called an understudy. Block has both, I believe,...Kathy Voytko as her standby and she may also have an understudy who plays an ensemble role in the show.

FYI to the original poster: Block has been very ill and took 2 shows off before opening night just so she could perform opening night (which was Friday). I heard she took off a few shows this weekend to get back to 100% and fully recover. Sorry you didn%26#39;t see her...she was wonderful in the role of Grace. I did hear Kathy Voytko has been doing a fabulous job standing in for her.

Thanks for the replies. Kathy Voytko did to a good job in the roll of Grace and I would definitly recommend the show.

Saturday night, 4/7, we saw Maureen Moore as stand-by for Christine Ebersole in ';Grey Gardens';, and she was terrific! (We%26#39;ve seen the documentary and thought both Moore and Mary-Louise Wilson nailed the characterizations 100%. Creepy!)

Sure I%26#39;d love to see Ebersole, but we were very happy with the entire show. Maybe we%26#39;ll go back another time.

Stephanie%26#39;s best role was that of Nellie Forbush in South Pacific. The crowd gave her a standing ovation at both the half time interval and at the end of that musical. And Bonne Tyler, who was watching in the wings, was moved to tears by Block%26#39;s performance which she described as ';the best thing since sliced bread';.
