Nice shops

Hi

My Mum, Daughter (14) and I are going to New York on 20th April to 23rd April. Have read some bad reviews and a few good about Century 21 Shopping Centre and the usual Macy%26#39;s and Bloomingdales but what other nice shops would you recommend - being %26#39;virgin travellers%26#39; we haven%26#39;t got a clue. Staying at the Millenium Hilton

Thanks

Nice shops

What constitutes ';nice'; for you? Since you%26#39;re staying downtown, it would be foolish not to try Century 21 since it will be so close. NYCgirl says it%26#39;s good for certain things like linens.

If you give us a better idea of price and types of things you want to buy, we can help. Another discount place with a downtown location not far from your hotel is Sym%26#39;s. (They also have a midtown store).

Your daughter will like H %26amp; M, Forever 21, Strawberry. Soho isn%26#39;t far from your hotel and there%26#39;s a good mix of chain stores (ie Gap, Banana Republic, Monaco) and smaller boutiques. The Bloomingdales in Soho is younger and trendier (not sure they offer thge 11% discount there though). Lord %26amp; Taylor is a nice dept. store midtown for all of you.

Nice shops

What exactly are you looking for? There are literally thousands of stores in New York. Just for clothing, it runs from Thrift Stores to fancy places selling a dress for 5 figures.

Levis, Estee Lauder, Playstation Games, Bliss - that sort of thing - all very expensive here but going with a nice empty case to fill up!!!!! We often order stuff online but its extortionate to get shipped etc so will be nice to buy over the counter. Origins products are dear here so are there any places selling Origins? Thanks for your replys-we are very exicted and can%26#39;t wait to see the City. We are next to Ground Zero so will have a visit there and hopefully light a candle

As Wizz said, you are next to Century 21 so give it a shot. It can be hit or miss. I would go early to avoid the crowds. The place isn%26#39;t known for customer service.

For electronics, places like Best Buy are good (they should be cheaper than in Scotland).

Thanks very much. Will surely pop in with my teenager - she won%26#39;t care if the assistants are in a bad mood as long as she bags a bargain!!!!

Look forward to our trip - will post some photos when we get back - hope ths sun shines for us!!!!

Century 21 is not the best for women%26#39;s clothes, IMHO. Dressing rooms are awful and the selection is not their strong point. It is, however, a treasure trove for children%26#39;s clothes, luggage, handbags and small leathers, souvenirs and cutsie teen things (like note pads and photo albums) socks and hosiery, shoes, men%26#39;s underwear and pajamas, and men%26#39;s clothes, especially ties.

In addition to H%26amp;M, Forever 21, etc, what about Ann Taylor or Ann Taylor Loft, Banana Republic, Old Navy and even Loehmann%26#39;s?

I%26#39;d go to Union Square, go to Diesel, Filene%26#39;s Basement, etc and then walk down Broadway all the way to Soho.

Ok will do thanks. Just dying to get there and hit those changing rooms!!!! Hope I manage to buy something or i%26#39;ll be wearing the same clothes for 4 days ha ha.

Is Macys the best place to go for beauty products, perfume etc?

Best places for beauty products would be the ';beauty level';, below ground level at Bergdorf Goodman (W57th and Fifth Avenue) and the first floor of Saks Fifth Avenue (49th and Fifth Avenue).

We also have Sephora%26#39;s (just like in Europe) which you can find pretty much anywhere.

For jeans other than Levis, your daughter may want to hit the Fifth floor of Saks which carries Juicy Couture, 7 jeans, Citizens, Rock %26amp; Republic (and the list goes on).

If you%26#39;re interested in shoes, there is a DSW near your hotel (in the same building as the Embassy Suites), which sells all kinds of shoes, both unique and practical.

Century 21 is definitely worth it, especially since you are so close - if you go to look for something very specific, you may be disappointed, but if you like digging through racks to hunt for items that suit your taste, you%26#39;ll enjoy it. It%26#39;s generally crowded, especially on weekends, and the lines for the fitting rooms can be long, so allow time for trying on clothes if you%26#39;re sticking to a schedule.

Another discount department store in the city is Daffy%26#39;s - I believe there is a branch of this chain downtown as well.

If you go to Union Square (14th Street - take the 4/5 (green) subway line from the Fulton Street stop, which is close to the Millenium), you can hit a lot of the stores mentioned by other posters all in one area - there is a Forever 21, DSW, Filene%26#39;s Basement, Strawberry (which I personally would not recommend), Diesel (for jeans), American Eagle, Paragon Sports store (sells lots of nice athletic/workout clothing, coats etc. as well as sporting goods). A little further from these there is also an Old Navy, which is also inexpensive for teen clothes.

Great thank you. Will print off everyones comments and try to go to all the ones advised.

Regards

Twinky!
