Mobile phone cover

We fly into New York in 9 days time and want to buy a mobile phone which will give us reception while there. What sort of basic phone will work best? We need one that will take cards from other countries as we travel around the world.

Thanks.

Unfortunately it%26#39;s next to impossible to buy an unlocked cell phone (what you%26#39;d need to use cards from other countries) here in a retail store. You can buy them online in advance of your trip and buy a phone card either online or when you arrive. Just make sure the phone you buy has the right frequency to work here.

ANother option is to buy a pay as you go phone here from Cingular or T Mobile which will have good coverage. You can then try to have it unlocked for use elsewhere. Virgin Mobil also has pay as you go phones.

Here%26#39;s another thread on this subject from another Aussie

yea i would recommend a pay as you go phone

you can find them pretty cheap and almost anywhere - i think places like CVS and Walgreens even sell them

as far as an unlocked phone you can get them on ebay or from small retail cell stores..not directly from a tmobile or verizon store

Probably best to purchase a tri-band phone, if you%26#39;re going to purchase one before you leave Australia. Most new phone are tri-band and you can get them on pre-paid and after you%26#39;ve purchased it you can ask them to turn on the roaming, if you%26#39;d like to do that.

However keep in mind if you buy a pre-paid before you leave that it will be locked to the network and probably impossible to use with another SIM card.

Sorry Sandoise to jump in on your topic Does any one Know if mobils from UK are OK my is pay as you go Vodaphone cheers Sandoise and cheers all great forum

Yes, I also have a Vodaphone pay as you go phone... so does Vodaphone operate in USA?

Vodafone.com has a partnership with Verizon here, a major carrier with good coverage in NYC. Whether your phone will work here depends on whether it has the right bands since ours is different than yours. You can perhaps contact Vodafone in your home countries and find out. But assuming it%26#39;s not an unlocked phone, every time you make a call it will be a long distance call (to the UK or Australia), so in addition to having the correct band width, you also need it to be unlocked in order to use a local SIM card.
