Thelma & Louise Part Deux -Take Manhattan!

Girls spring break in NYC 2nd week of April with the following itinerary:

Tuesday – arrive at Sofitel mid-afternoon then relax in lounge for a cocktail. Subway down to Village for dinner at either: Sapore, Mughlai, Suyra.

Recommendations welcome for moderate, no reservations req’d place relatively close to Village Vanguard. After dinner, we’re off to Village Vanguard to listen to jazz. Taxi home.

Wednesday – Speed see museums – see sample of “Best of” at:

Metropolitan: Cypresses, Madame X, View of Toledo, Garden of Saint Adresse, Dance Class, Rocky Mountains, Lighthouse, Cow’s Skull, etc.

Central Park (if not raining) – see wander Wien Walk, Bow Bridge, etc.

Lunch somewhere between The Met %26amp; MoMa, next stop after lunch. Open to suggestions, but here are some samples of places we’re considering: “212” (65th %26amp; Lexington), Daniel (65th %26amp; Madison), Geisha (61st %26amp; Madison), Otabe (56th %26amp; Madison), Aquavit (65 E. 55th). Maybe all these are not open for lunch, but if anyone has any suggestions, would like to here them.

MoMa – See highlights, top on my list: Persistence of Memory, Starry Night, Girl Before a Mirror, Hope, Black Widow scupture, Chuch Close self portrait.

Back towards Sofitel. Cocktails at Algonquin. Relax at hotel.

Suggestions for Dinner prior to Theatre??

Off to see “A Chorus Line” Wednesday night.

Thursday – Open to wander Lower Manhattan (morning WTC site), Staten Island ferry, shop %26amp; sight see.

Dinner?? Maybe - Turkish Cuisine, Chelsea Grill of Hell%26#39;s Kitchen, Aburiya Kinnosuke or Alonzo%26#39;s (both these last two, I know are more on the Eastside but perhaps late lunch/early dinner?), Georgio%26#39;s Country Grill or open to other ideas.

In the evening, see “A Moon for the Misbegotten”.

Friday – Morning subway East Village to Tenement House %26amp; Merchant’s House, walk NW to Chelsea to visit galleries, shop. Light lunch suggestions??? Thinking of: The Dish, Holy Basil, Hell%26#39;s KItchen.

Evening taking water taxi to River Café for early dinner, followed by Barge Music next door. Taxi to Manhattan to finish evening by have fabulous dessert somewhere, perhaps Daniel? Any suggestions for great dessert/coffee between Village %26amp; 44st Street?

Saturday – Last minute shopping, NYC souvenirs (best ones???), car service to LGA.

Sounds like you have a lot of energy!

Tuesday - How about eating at %26#39;good%26#39;? Yes, that%26#39;s the name.

Sapore is a decent, tiny, super-bargain Italian place, but as I get older, eat out less and find better places, it has dropped down on my list. If you can afford a little more, there are a variety of places on Greenwich Street that are a notch above Sapore.

good is a little noisy and thetablesareclosetogether (like Sapore), but the service, food and drinks are, I think, better than just ';good';. I hope it%26#39;s not out of your price range.

Wednesday - Pre-theatre - what are you looking for?

Thursday - dining atmos: Georgio%26#39;s Country Grill is a very nice diner. Chelsea Grill of Hell%26#39;s Kitchen is a nice pub atmo. I enjoy them both and think they are great values. They are both casual, not formal. Another place on a similar level is Film Center Cafe, on 9th around 44th St. Granted, I haven%26#39;t been there since their renovation last year.

Firday - make sure you stop at Economy Candy! A must see if you%26#39;re going to the Tenement Museum anyway:

Chelsea is about 2.5 miles from the L.E.S. If you don%26#39;t want to walk the whole thing, how about taking the F train from Delancey Street to, say, W. 4th Street, and walking north up 6th Ave or 7th Ave to Chelsea? Still a nice walk (only about a mile from there). You%26#39;ll be on your feet a lot at the galleries, so think foot conservation!

For nice pub food and beer near the galleries, check out The Half King. Mellow during the day. Good place to rest.

For a larger lunch in Chelsea, The Dish is another good casual bargain. Reliable decent diner food of all kinds, great prices. Ended up there last Friday as a late-night, over-tired, fall-back place when my friends and I had a decision-making-breakdown.

Hell%26#39;s Kitchen is very nice, and costs more, but it%26#39;s kinda in a bit of a dead zone, imho. If you want something a tad more interesting (albeit a little more $$), how about Rocking Horse Mexican or my new fave step-above-cheapo, Tour.

For interesting Thai in Chelsea, there are three places that have more modern decor and atmos (and can get a bit noisy): Spice (which is always crowded, but has very nice food), Nooch (while not my personal fave, everyone else I know likes it) and Room Service (which I think is ok, but no one else does. Why? Because truly the service is, ironically, really awful.)

Queensboulevard,

Thanks for the tips for our itinerary. Especially the F Train between E. Village %26amp; Lower East Side.

Tuesday:

“good” restaurant looks great – their mini-mozzarella %26amp; arugula sandwiches %26amp; bass w/fennel are tempting.

Wednesday:

1.) Lunch? Leaning towards either Geisha, Aburiya Kinnosuke, or Otabe Japanese (NYTimes pick) for between The Met and MoMa. I welcome any comments on these or recommendations for this area between the museums?

2.) Suggestions for pre-theatre Wednesday dinner – open to most anything, but favor seafood, Thai, Japanese %26amp; light Italian, less than $30/entrée. Probably will eat early, 6PM so may have time make 8PM curtain at theatre 45th %26amp; 8th Ave. What do you think of ViceVersa?

Any other suggestions?

3.) At first I wasn’t too interested in Economy Candy, but the “old” versions make it worth a stop if in the neighborhood. I don’t like candy that much; my favored sweets are cookies (Black %26amp; Whites), cupcakes %26amp; pastries.

Any suggestions for great bakery in the E.Village, Village or Chelsea?

4.) Rocking Horse, Nooch and Spice sound good – which Spice location is preferable: 60 University Pl or 199 8th Ave?

5.) Oh, and any suggestions for really wonderful dessert? We might want to go after the theatre late Wednesday and/or Thursday, so in that geographic area would be nice. Also in Greenwich Village after our jazz on Tuesday night.

Thanks again.
