Places to eat in New York?

I%26#39;m coming to New York in a fortnight with my boyfriend and we%26#39;ve booked a couple of meals out (dinner cruise, tavern on the green) We stil have a couple of evenings to fill and I was wondering if anyone could recommend anywhere. We are 23 years old and don%26#39;t really like too fancy food. We are staying on Times Square so anywhere nearby would be good.

Thanks

Any particular kind of food? Indian, Italian, Peruvian, etc.?

The general recommendation of posters is to eat elsewhere in the city than Times Square, which has a large number of chains, but here are three threads that mention restaurants in the area you might try:

we%26#39;re looking for some traditional american food. I love a good steak and my boyfriend loves hamburgers. We also like Italian.

Have you looked at menupages.com yet? You can search retaurants by neighborhood, cuisine, meal, and price.

You may want to check out local diners/coffee shops/luncheonettes (in NYC the terms are pretty interchangeable; notice that ';cofee shop'; does not usually mean a place like Starbucks that just serves cofee, but instead means an inexpensive restaurant with a counter and stools), such as the Edison Hotel coffee shop, or the Westway diner on Ninth Avenue between 43rd and 44th.

Be aware that Tavern on the Green is considered a nice room, but indifferent food.

I was in New York last week and ate at BLT Steak. I thought it was very good, and it%26#39;s not far from Times Square although we did take a cab from 8th avenue.

The entrees were a la carte. I could have made a meal off the bread that they bring you - more like dessert. I had a filet and my husband and son had ribeye. We would go back.

ellie - traditional american food? hamburgers? Sounds like Blue Smoke to me. Barbecue, pulled pork sandwiches and one of the best burgers in town, all with a great beer selection. E 27th Street. http://www.bluesmoke.com/blue/index.html

Try Keene%26#39;s Steak house for an authentic NY steakhouse. They have a bar menu that is a little less expensive. Also, the barbeque restaurant RUB on W 23 St.

Get out of Times Square and go to 9th Avenue, the Hell%26#39;s Kitchen neighborhood. How about Film Center Cafe, Chelsea Grill of Hell%26#39;s Kitchen, Georgio%26#39;s Country Grill - 3 casual burger-and-fries places.
