We%26#39;re planning to get married in New York in 2 weeks at City Hall. We will be on our own so how to we go about getting a witness. Do City hall have personnel that can act as a witness for us?

No they don%26#39;t. You%26#39;ll be able to ask someone in the queue to do it for you, at least they%26#39;ll have ID with them (if they%26#39;re either getting married themselves or witnessing for someone else)

You don%26#39;t get married or get your license at City Hall. You get married at the Municipal Builsing, across the street, east of City Hall.

You can get married (or just get the license) at any of the five Borough Halls in NYC.

Also, NO CREDIT CARDS to pay the fee. You MUST get a MONEY ORDER, which you can get at a post office, bank or check-cashing kiosk. Do this in advance.

If you search, there are a number of posts describing the experience of getting married at the City Clerk%26#39;s offices in Manhattan, Brooklyn, and Staten Island. (One can also do it in Queens and the Bronx, but I have never seen a post about thos locations.) Of the three, the experience at the Staten Island office seemed to be the most pleasant for the couple involved, and the building was the nicest one on the inside. The main issue, of course, is the inconvenient distance -- you need to go across to Staten Island, either by ferry or another way, although Staten Island Borough Hall is quite close to the ferry terminal.

Also be aware that you must get your license at least 24 hours before the actual ceremony. You do not have to get the license at the same office of the Clerk where you will be married; you may get the license in one borough and get married the next day in another.

Hi there, we got married at Staten Island three weeks ago (doesn%26#39;t time fly !) You can pick up our trip reports by searching for other posts on my log in name. Thankfully we managed to avoid the issue of finding a witness as Ange was there at the same time as us and volounteered !

Staten Island is much nicer than Brooklyn or Manhattan but not sure how easy you would find a witness as it%26#39;s not very busy.

Hope you have a lovely time - we didn%26#39;t stop smiling all day !
